Off-roading seems to be the ultimate draw for truck buyers. GMC is giving its 2021 Canyon AT4 an off-roading performance package to better compete.
It used to be that very few people bought vehicles for off-roading, but now getting out into the great outdoors is all the rage. Off-roading packages can boost a vehicle’s appeal especially to a younger demographic. The 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 just debuted last January and GMC is now adding an off-roading performance package to take on competitors like the Jeep Gladiator.
2021 GMC Canyon AT4 Performance Edition
GMC has always been the premium truck brand for GM, but now GMC wants everyone to know that the truck is just as rugged as all of its competitors. GMC is beefing up the Canyon’s undercarriage to better protect the vehicle during off-roading adventures. A new suspension leveling kit, rocker panel protectors and aluminum skid plates will give the mid-size truck better protection while off-roading.
“When customers are looking for a capable off-road truck, we know that they want improved vehicle height as well as additional protection,” said GMC Marketing Director Rich Latek. “Whether it’s tackling die-hard off-road courses or embarking on a weekend adventure, the Canyon AT4 Off-Road Performance Edition provides an improved approach angle, enhanced maneuverability and underbody protection to key parts of the truck, while still delivering a premium GMC experience.”
What AT4 Means
GMC debuted the AT4 designation in 2018 on its GMC Sierra pickup. AT4 is a trim level that emphasizes off-roading. The AT4 models typically have all-wheel-drive and some additional off-roading capabilities and features.
When the Canyon AT4 debuted in January, it had a more macho design and appeared to be more rugged. Since then, several players like the Ford Bronco, and the Jeep Gladiator have either entered the segment or upped their capabilities. GMC is determined to make sure that the 2021 Canyon AT4 remains at the head of the pack.
For the off-roading performance edition, GMC is removing the front air dam to improve the truck’s approach angle. The Canyon AT4 Performance edition will have a nearly 30-degree approach angle. The suspension leveling kit will give the driver better control and confidence while taking on the toughest of trails. The aluminum skid plates will help protect the lower radiator, front differential, steering gear and oil pan. In combination with the transfer case shield standard on the Canyon AT4, the Off-Road Performance Edition offers the protection to the majority of the truck’s powertrain.
The off-road performance package adds some special logos and 17-inch wheels to complete the upgraded appearance.
You can start ordering the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 Off-Road Performance Edition later this year.
