When Ram debuted the 2025 Ram Revolution Concept, the pickup included a third row with jump seats. It now looks like Ram is considering building a three-row pickup.
When Ram unveiled the long-awaited 2025 Ram 1500 Revolution EV Concept at CES in January of 2023, the pickup included several futuristic designs. One of the ideas that garnered a lot of attention was the suggestion that the BEV could include a mid-gate to allow drivers to expand the truck bed for more room. The other really popular design was that the electric pickup could have three rows of seats. The third-row seats would be jump seats that could be folded down if the driver needed to carry more people.
Now it appears that Ram could actually be pursuing the possibility of a third row of seats. A publication called GM Authority has uncovered a patent filing from Ram for a third row of seats.
What Ram included in the Ram REV BEV Concept
As I wrote in January of 2023, “Ram elevated the pickup world when it added luxury and more interior space to the 2018 Ram 1500. It promises to redefine the Battery-electric truck market as well, with advanced technology, more cargo space, range, towing and payload. There is so much space in the cabin that Ram has created a third row of seating in the form of jump seats.”
“One cool feature is a powered mid-gate. That is where the jump seats are mounted. There is a removable lower section that allows for multiple flexible seating configurations. It also enables a pass-through (and into the frunk) that can fit objects up to 18-ft. long. The pass through could come in handy for anyone hauling lumber or similar over-sized objects.”
What GM Authority Uncovered
GM Authority reported, “GM rival Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has filed a patent application for a set of rear jump seats designed to attach in the back of a truck cabin, signaling potential interest in building a three-row Ram pickup. FCA is owned by Stellantis. The patent application was originally filed on December 14th, 2023, and was published on July 4th, 2024. The application is tagged with patent number US 2024/0217404 A1 and lists several Michigan-based engineers as the inventors.”
“In the patent application, a third-row jump seat configuration is described as attaching and detaching from the rear wall of a passenger cabin. The jump seat configuration includes a detachable frame, a seat back that attaches to the frame, and a seat that pivots while attached to the frame so that it can be configured into a deployable position when needed, or moved parallel to the seat back when it is not.”
Could We Actually See the Third Row in a Vehicle?
Ram wouldn’t have gone ahead with the patent filing unless the company wanted to safeguard the design for future use. The 2025 Ram REV BEV is scheduled to go into production during the fourth quarter, but it is unclear if the jump seats will be included. It could be that the design will be included in a different truck. Obviously, Ram took steps to preserve the possibility, so I think we’ll see it someday. I'm sure Ram and truck fans are hoping it will happen sooner rather than later.
