Ford is Recalling More than 90,000 2021-2022 Super Duty Trucks and 2021 Expeditions Because of Potentially Bad Backup Cameras

Many automakers have had problems with back up cameras. It is an important safety concern, especially with the larger vehicles, because if you can't see what is behind you, you can hit someone or something.

Ford is recalling 91,580 2021-2022 Super Duty trucks, 2021 Expeditions and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsairs because the backup cameras can be faulty. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford found out about the problem because of an unusual number of complaints and warranty claims about the vehicles. Originally, the recall was just for the Super Duty trucks, but Ford amended the recall to add much larger trucks because they also were having similar problems. The issue is a huge safety concern especially for larger vehicles like pickups. According to NHTSA, “A rear-view camera that intermittently displays a blank or distorted image while in reverse can reduce or distort the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Ford Vehicles Being Recalled

  • 59,365 - 2021-2022 Ford Super Duty, F- 250, F-350, F-450, F-550, and F-600 models
  • 21,088 – 2021 Ford Expedition vehicles
  • 11,127 - 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles

How Ford Will Fix the Problem

That is a huge question because according to the paperwork filed with NHTSA, Ford hasn’t discovered what is causing the cameras to have issues. According to the Safety Recall Report, “The specific root cause of the concern has not yet been determined. Based on minimal rear-view camera repeat repairs, Ford believes that the main causal factor is within this specific camera.” In other words, they believe it is the actual analog camera causing the problem. Other automakers have had problems with the wiring and also the insulation around the wiring allowing feedback from other electronics in the vehicle to interfere with the camera signal. Ford is said to be working on a remedy and will notify owners as soon as they have one available. Ford and Lincoln dealers will fix the problem free once they determine how to fix it.

Ford is aware of six owners who filled out complaints and Vehicle Owner's Questionnaires for NHTSA. Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition. Ford will notify owners about the issue starting Mar 03, 2025. Ford will notify owners again once they have a way to fix it. They may have to replace the analog cameras with a newer version. The NHTSA number for the recall is 25V-048. The Ford number for the recall is 25S05.
