Tesla Cybertruck Owner Stranded in the Cold After Battery Dies Unexpectedly – Shatters Window Simply Trying to Open the Door

A Tesla Cybertruck owner reported that he broke his driver’s side window while attempting to simply open and close the door. This incident occurred while he was stuck on the road after his Cybertruck's battery unexpectedly died in cold weather.

Robert Rice is a Cybertruck owner from Morgantown, West Virginia. He reports that his Cybertruck has experienced a series of frustrating incidents, culminating in a shattered driver's side window that occurred while he was simply trying to close the Cybertruck door.

The entire situation started when Robert was driving in the cold with a low state of charge. His Cybertruck showed 10 miles remaining, but unexpectedly, the range dropped to zero due to the cold weather.

Robert adds he was only 2 miles away from his home when his Cybertruck gave out.

This is bad enough; however, things got even worse while he was stranded in the middle of the road.

With the dead battery and the Cybertruck completely shutdown, Robert had to rely on the Cybertruck’s emergency manual door release to exit the vehicle.

This isn’t necessarily a problem, however, when using the emergency door release, the Cybertruck windows do not roll down to give them the space to clear the door seal.

Usually, when using the emergency release, Tesla vehicles, including the Cybertruck, will display an error message saying something like “emergency door release use may damage window trim.”

In Robert’s case, he was able to open the door without too much difficulty. However, the issue started when he tried to close it again.

Since the window was fully raised when Robert attempted to close the door, his driver's side frameless window struck the exterior stainless steel panel and ended up shattered.

Understandably, Robert was not happy with the series of events that unfolded, and the West Virginia Cybertruck owner shared his experience to serve as a cautionary tale for fellow Cybertruck owners.

First, Robert says don’t trust the Cybertruck’s estimated miles remaining during the cold. Second, the Cybertruck owner adds, make sure the windows are rolled down before closing the door.

The frustrated Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners group on Facebook.

Here is what he wrote…

“Okay, I am not complaining one bit because if I would have charged more it wouldn’t have happened. 

However, less than two miles from my home, the Cybertruck quit.

I had to open the door manually, and when there is no battery, the window doesn’t roll down. So, lesson learned is that before you shut the door, you need to put 12 volt power to the vehicle because if you don’t and try to shut the door, the shatterproof glass will break.

In cold weather conditions, you can go from 10 miles to zero in less than 1/2 mile. As I said, my fault but it would have been nice to know about the 12 volts before closing the door.”

Looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners criticized Robert for running his battery down to zero.

A fellow Cybertruck owner, Juston Brazda writes…

“It’s hard to run the battery out on these things. There are warnings and messages popping up the entire time. You obviously ignored them.”

Another Cybertruck owner, Mike Rodrigues, writes…

“I’m in Colorado and we’ve been as cold as -10 here this winter and I’ve had no issues. Use % instead of miles on your display and heed all warnings. There are a few extra miles once you hit zero %. And expect a little range loss in cold temps.”

A third Cybertruck owner asks…

“curious as to warnings? Were there any? Thank you”

In response, Robert writes…

“Yes, there were warnings but I would have had enough range except it went from 8 miles remaining to 0 in less than half a mile.

Lesson learned when it says that you need to charge better regardless of what the mileage says.”
