Electric vehicles (EVs) have come a long way in a short time. Barely a decade has passed since the ambitious Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors introduced the world to an electric car capable of traveling more than 300 miles on a single charge. Since then, Elon Musk and Tesla have convinced many dubious onlookers that electric vehicles are not only here to stay, but that they can become the future of transportation.

Other automakers have joined the EV movement at very different rates. The Nissan Leaf, for example, debuted in 2010 and went on to become the best-selling all-electric vehicle in the world for a time. Competition from the BMW i3 followed, as well as the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt and its all-electric successor the Chevy Bolt EV, but only the Tesla Model 3 has been able to steal the Leaf's crown. Heading into a new decade, electric vehicles are set to go from strength-to-strength, with new models like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV competing in the entry-level category and the Audi e-Tron, Porsche Taycan, or Jaguar I-PACE vying with Tesla at the top end of the market.

With entire classes of vehicle still lacking an electric version, such as pick-up trucks and affordable SUVs, there's huge potential for expansion and growth in the EV marketplace. For now, Tesla is still blazing the trail, but legacy manufacturers are lining up to electrify their fleets and promising startups like Rivian and Byton are waiting in the wings with exciting new electric vehicles.

There was a deal announced today between Tesla and Hertz. Hertz is buying 100,000 Model 3 vehicles from Tesla. This is a genius move from Hertz, which recently went bankrupt. I believe this is the first deal of many between rental car companies and Tesla and is the beginning of the robotaxi network.

Tesla has decided to roll back FSD Beta 10.3 software just hours after the EV maker rolled out the software. Elon Musk says the rollback was instituted after Tesla internal quality assurance team discovered an issue where the vehicle will drive back in the middle of making a left turn.

As per Tesla´s Q3 report, the company is switching over to LFP (Lithium Iron Phospate) batteries for all of its standard range Model Y and Model 3 cars. Tesla also intends to bring LFP battery production to the same locations where it manufactures its vehicles (Giga Texas, Giga Berlin), as per the latest information available.

Very good numbers come from New Zealand, as Tesla Model 3 outsold Toyota mainstays such as Toyota´s Corolla, Hilux and RAV4 models in September. Electricity helped give New Zealand new-vehicle sales a boost, with a big bounceback from Covid-19 restrictions: it was the second biggest month on record for registrations, with electrified models making up a very nice 21 per cent of the 16,518 total.

When first announced, the Tesla Semi was said to have amazing features: for starters, a range of over 500 miles (800 km) under highway conditions; without a load it will accelerate from 0 to 60 miles in 5 seconds and with a load of 80,219 lbs (36,287 kg) it will do it in 20 seconds. This is more than twice as fast as a diesel truck. It can maintain a speed of 65 mph (105 km/h) going up a 5% climb fully loaded, whereas a diesel truck can only maintain 45 mph (72 km/h) under the same conditions.
