The All-New Subaru Solterra Breaks Cover - Complete Details And Images

Subaru just revealed its first-ever all-electric SUV called the Solterra this morning in Japan. Subaru Corporation uncovered its all-electric compact SUV with a live presentation by Subaru President and CEO Tomomi Nakamura and an introduction by the Solterra development manager.

It’s Subaru’s first new model launch since the Ascent SUV made its U.S. introduction in 2019.

Subaru says it will win buyers with the brand's X-Mode all-wheel-drive control system. Subaru also added a Grip Control function to improve stability on rough roads. The press release said that the powertrain further adopts a new system that drives the front and rear wheels with separate motors.

Subaru said like the Toyota bZ4X, the Solterra will come in two layouts: front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. In Japan, both variants get a 71.4-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. It's unsure if the U.S. will get both models.

The front-drive version gets a single 150-kilowatt motor on the front axle and has a range of 329 miles. The all-wheel-drive version has an 80-kilowatt motor on each of the front and back axles and delivers a range of 285 miles.

The Solterra's interior reflects high-tech styling. The steering wheel is low, with the instrument panel recessed from the driver. A massive upright digital display dominates the dashboard.

When will the Solterra be available in the U.S.?

The Solterra is expected to make its U.S. launch in mid-2022. The new EV will go on sale in Japan and the U.S. and then be released in Canada, Europe, and China. The new Subaru Solterra makes its U.S. debut at LA Auto Show next.

Potential buyers can see the 2023 Subaru Solterra EV at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Friday, November 19, 2021, through Sunday, November 28, 2021. Subaru of America also says the unveiling of its first all-electric 2023 Solterra compact SUV in Los Angeles on November 17 will be streamed live. Stay tuned.
