In the competitive world of compact SUVs and crossovers, the new Dodge Hornet GT now arrives with plenty of energy and stinging “forward.” With its avant-garde design, impressive performance and a wide range of innovative features, this vehicle arrived to the market with a strong campaign that adopts the properties of a hornet that lives up to its name.
The 2024 Dodge Hornet is a fresh face in the competitive compact SUV market.
Sharing its platform and basic design with the stylish Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Hornet brings a sporty edge to the Dodge lineup. Under the hood, a turbocharged four-cylinder engine sends power to all four wheels through a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission. While its interior space might be a bit cramped compared to rivals like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, the Hornet makes up for it with a lively driving experience. Dodge has also packed the Hornet with a generous amount of standard features, including modern tech and safety aids, making it a compelling option for buyers seeking a fun and well-equipped compact SUV.
The 2024 Dodge Hornet carries over largely unchanged from its debut year. The main new addition for the model year is the Hornet Hybrid, which we'll explore in a separate review.
Engine and Power
The 2024 Dodge Hornet packs a punch. All non-hybrid models come equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 268 horsepower. This power is channeled through a nine-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. On the road, the Hornet feels lively and quick. Our testing showed it can sprint from zero to 60 mph in a respectable 5.7 seconds.
While the Hornet is fun to drive, its handling, though confident, doesn’t quite reach the sporty heights of rivals like Mazda or Volkswagen. It’s definitely more engaging than more laid-back competitors like the Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage, but those models offer a smoother ride for those who prioritize comfort over spirited driving.
2024 Dodge Hornet Trims and Pricing
The 2024 Dodge Hornet is offered in two trims: GT and R/T with their Plus packages. Dodge says it's also introducing Plug-in Hybrid Electric (PHEV) capability that doesn't sacrifice performance.
The Dodge Hornet starts at $32,995 for the base GT trim and climbs to $37,995 for the top-tier GT Plus.
Even the base GT model comes well-equipped with features like a large infotainment screen, wireless smartphone connectivity, and automatic climate control.
If you live in a colder climate, the Cold Weather Package is a worthwhile option, adding heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a remote start.
Fuel Economy of The 2024 Dodge Hornet Is a Mixed Bag
The 2024 Dodge Hornet doesn't exactly set the bar for fuel efficiency. The EPA estimates a combined fuel economy of 24 mpg, with 21 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway. During our highway test, our GT Plus model managed 28 mpg, which is slightly better than the EPA's estimate. While these numbers aren't terrible for a performance-oriented SUV, they certainly lag behind some of the more fuel-efficient options in the compact SUV segment. If fuel economy is a top priority, you might want to consider other options.

Exterior Design
The 2024 Dodge Hornet doesn't shy away from making a statement. Its exterior design is a bold blend of muscle car heritage and modern SUV practicality.
The front fascia, with its aggressive stance and distinctive grille, commands attention. In fact, just two days ago, as I was entering Starbucks, someone mistook it for the new Mustang Mach-E. The Hornet's muscular body lines flow seamlessly into a sculpted rear, completing a sporty and dynamic look.
While it's undeniably a look-at-me vehicle, the Hornet's design also serves a functional purpose, with elements like the hood scoops contributing to its performance-oriented character. It’s a design that's as likely to turn heads in the city as it is on a winding road.
Interior Comfort and Space
The Hornet's interior is stylish and driver-focused, with a design that echoes its sporty exterior. While the front seats offer ample comfort and support, the rear accommodations are a bit tighter, making it less ideal for taller passengers. The interior materials are of good quality, and the available leather and faux-suede options elevate the cabin's ambiance.
Infotainment and Technology
Technology is a strong suit of the Hornet. A standard 10.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster provide a modern and informative driving experience. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system is user-friendly and offers features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Upgrading to the GT Plus trim brings a premium Harman/Kardon audio system and built-in navigation, enhancing the overall in-car experience.
Cargo Space
While the Hornet excels in terms of style and technology, cargo space is a bit of a limitation. Its compact dimensions mean there's less room for luggage compared to some of its competitors. However, the rear seats fold down to expand cargo capacity when needed.
The Drive
The 2024 Dodge Hornet offers a driving experience that is distinctly Dodge.
Its sporty character shines through in its handling and performance. The Hornet feels agile and responsive, with a well-balanced chassis that inspires confidence on winding roads.
Equipped with a turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, the Hornet delivers brisk acceleration and solid grip. While it's not as overtly sporty as some dedicated performance SUVs, it certainly holds its own in the compact crossover segment. Steering is precise, providing good feedback to the driver.
However, it's important to note that the Hornet's focus on performance does come with a slight trade-off in ride comfort. While it's not harsh, the suspension is tuned for a firmer ride, which can be felt on rougher road surfaces.
Here are its top 7 advantages over its closest competitors:
Performance Focus
- Powerful Engines: Both the GT and R/T trims offer impressive horsepower figures, outperforming many competitors in the segment.
- Thrilling Driving Experience: The Hornet's handling and steering are tuned for an engaging driving experience, setting it apart from the competition.
- Plug-in Hybrid Option: The R/T model offers a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain, providing 32 miles electric-only driving range and strong performance.
Unique Character
- Muscular Design: The Hornet's bold and aggressive styling stands out from the crowd, appealing to performance-oriented buyers.
- Dodge Heritage: The Hornet carries the iconic Dodge badge, resonating with performance enthusiasts and adding a touch of exclusivity.
Value Proposition
- Competitive Pricing: The Hornet offers a strong value proposition, providing impressive features and performance at a competitive price point.
- Potential for Customization: Dodge has hinted at future performance upgrades through its Direct Connection program, offering owners the ability to further enhance their Hornet's capabilities.
It's important to note that while the Hornet excels in these areas, individual preferences and priorities may vary.
The Dodge Hornet GT is a compact SUV that goes beyond expectations. Its stunning design, powerful performance, advanced technology and focus on safety and comfort make it an attractive option for those looking for a high-end sports car and a good price.
