At Kia, the best example of EVs being powerful performance cars is the EV6 GT, which I test-drove this week for Torque News. This is the most premium version of this vehicle, and it is a 100% electric compact SUV. When Kia introduced this car and I reviewed it in 2022, I said finally there is a decent competitor to Tesla Model Y.
The 2024 Kia EV6 GT is more than just an electric vehicle; it's a stylish and powerful ride that makes electric driving enjoyable. With its sleek design, impressive range, and thrilling performance, the EV6 GT stands out in a crowded market. It offers a comfortable and spacious interior, packed with advanced technology. Whether you're commuting daily or embarking on a road trip, the EV6 GT delivers a smooth and efficient driving experience.
Trims and Pricing
The 2024 Kia EV6 offers a range of trims to suit different needs and budgets: Light, Wind, GT-Line, and GT. The base Light trim provides a good starting point with essential features, while the Wind trim adds more convenience and technology. For those seeking a sportier experience, the GT-Line trim offers upgraded performance and styling. At the top of the lineup, the GT trim delivers exhilarating performance with its powerful electric motors.
The starting Light trim of the 2024 Kia EV6 starts at about $43,975 MSRP, while the top GT trim is priced at $64,090 with options and handling included.
I like the top-spec 576-hp GT and its powerful performance. However, I think most EV buyers are more interested in maximum driving range over maximum speediness, which anyway you can't use on US roads.
The Exterior Design
One of the most striking features of the 2024 Kia EV6 is its futuristic and sleek design. Its aerodynamic shape not only looks impressive but also contributes to its efficiency and range. The EV6's bold lines, sharp angles, and distinctive lighting signature give it a truly eye-catching appearance.
While the design remains essentially the same as the other versions, the GT version is still distinguished by the specific treatment of its grille as well as different fog lights. At the rear, we also note a difference in the lower part of the bumper. But it is especially from the side that we notice the unique 21-inch rims that house fluorescent green brake calipers. A color that is also found scattered in a few places in the passenger compartment, notably the central console where the seats.
Motor, Range and Battery
The 2024 Kia EV6 offers a variety of powertrain options. The base rear-wheel-drive models are equipped with a single electric motor, providing either 167 or 225 horsepower. All-wheel-drive models come with dual electric motors, delivering either 320 or a staggering 576 horsepower in the high-performance GT trim.
When it comes to range, the rear-wheel-drive models can travel up to 310 miles on a single charge. The all-wheel-drive models, while offering impressive performance, have a slightly shorter range.
The EV6 GT is a true performance powerhouse. With its 576 horsepower, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. It also features upgraded suspension, brakes, and an electronic limited-slip differential for enhanced handling and cornering abilities.
The 2024 Kia EV6 comes with two battery pack options. The entry-level Light model uses a smaller 58.0-kWh battery, which limits its range to 232 miles. All other trims, including the Wind and GT, are equipped with a larger 77.4-kWh battery.
While the larger battery pack offers impressive range, it's worth noting that the high-performance GT model has the shortest range of the bunch, estimated at 218 miles. While some drivers may be concerned about the EV6's range, Kia addresses this with its incredibly fast charging capabilities.
The EV6 supports fast charging, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% in under 18 minutes using a 350-kW DC fast charger. This translates to adding 70 miles of range in just 5 minutes. For home charging, the 11-kW onboard charger can fully charge the battery in about 7 hours when connected to a Level 2 charger.
Interior and Infotainment
The 2024 Kia EV6 GT offers a stylish and spacious interior. While the design may not be as futuristic as the exterior, it still offers a modern and driver-focused cabin. The interior features a sleek dashboard with a user-friendly infotainment system, a comfortable two-tone steering wheel, and ample storage options, including a large bin under the center console.
Despite its sleek design, the EV6 offers surprisingly generous passenger space, thanks to its long wheelbase. Both front and rear passengers will appreciate the comfortable seating and ample legroom.
The cargo space is also impressive, with 28 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54 cubic feet with the seats folded down. While the front trunk is smaller than expected, it still provides additional storage for smaller items.
Regarding the infotainment the 2024 Kia EV6 GT features a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that seamlessly integrates with the 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster. While the system offers a range of features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, the user interface and navigation system could be more intuitive. The infotainment system is also capable of receiving over-the-air updates and responding to voice commands. For audiophiles, the EV6 offers an optional Meridian sound system with 14 speakers.
The 2024 Kia EV6 GT-Line vs GT. What's the difference?
