The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will very likely be the best performing Camaro ever, both in terms of straight line acceleration and in handling, but the vast majority of muscle car owners like to further enhance the performance capabilities and for those folks – GM already has some solutions. Whether you plan to buy a new Camaro SS with the 6.2L LT1 or a Camaro LT with either the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or the V6, there will be performance goodies ready for purchase when you take delivery of your next generation muscle car.
Here are the 5 performance items announced for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, listed in no particular order.
Performance Exhaust System – Those 2016 Camaro buyers who pick the LT package with the V6 or the SS package with the V8 can add the new performance exhaust system, although Camaro SS buyers who get the dual mode exhaust cannot swap to the performance exhaust. This axle-back performance exhaust system maintains all of the factory warranties and adds extra grumble from the rear. There is no mention of performance gains, but the freer flowing exhaust may offer a slight improvement in power output. This package will be available in 2015.
Performance Air Intake – Those 2016 Chevrolet Camaro buyers who opt for the SS package can add a performance air intake setup. This setup includes an open element air filter, a cold air box that isolates the filter from the heat of the engine bay and the necessary tubing to get that cold air to the throttle body. There is no mention of performance increases, but since most cold air intake setups add a few extra horsepower, I would expect this to be similar. This package will be available in early 2016.
Suspension Lowering Kits – Whether you order your 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in LT or SS on coupe or convertible form, regardless of the engine chosen, there is a GM Performance Parts suspension lowering kit for your new muscle car. By adding unique front and rear springs along with new shocks and struts, this package lowers the new Camaro by almost an inch (0.8 inches, to be exact) – offering a more menacing stance and improved cornering capabilities. This package will be available in 2015. This package will be available in early 2016.
Brembo Performance Four Piston Package – Whether you are getting your 2016 Chevrolet Camaro LT with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or the 3.6L V6, you can add the Brembo four piston front brake package. This setup adds bright red Brembo four piston calipers and a set of 13.6 inch slotted, vented rotors. Basically, this is the standard brake setup for the 2016 Camaro SS, except added on cars with the turbo 4 or the V6. This package will be available in 2015.
Brembo Performance Six Piston Package – If you are buying a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, it comes with the Brembo four piston package mentioned above, but if you want even greater stopping forces, the Brembo six piston setup is your answer. In addition to the six piston calipers, this setup adds two piece rotors measuring 14.6 inches and high friction pads, along with the hoses and mounting hardware. Oh and this setup is also available with the Camaro LT, so while this is the only brake upgrade for the Camaro SS, 4 and 6-cylinder Camaro buyers can also get this premium brake package. This package will be available in 2015.
No pricing has been announced for any of these performance upgrade items, but if you have already spoken to your local dealership about ordering a 2016 Camaro, you should probably talk to your salesman about any of these items that you would like to have installed on your new muscle car when it arrives.
