The Ford Mustang GT California Special was first introduced back in 1968 and since then, Ford has offered up three modern iterations of the GT/CS, beginning in 2007, 2011 and 2016. For the 2019 model year, the fifth version of the Mustang GT California Special will arrive with the styling of the current pony car, the 460-horsepower V8 and a few of the unique features that have been offered on all of the GT/CS models over the course of the last 50+ years.
“Few things are more satisfying than dropping the top on a California Special and taking a drive down the majestic Pacific Coast Highway,” said Mark Conforzi, Ford designer. “This signature design takes its cues from the original California Special, while enhancing the personality of today’s Mustang.”
Six Unique GT/CS Features
When the 2019 Ford Mustang GT California Special arrives later this year, it will be available around the country in both fastback and convertible form, with either the 6-speed manual or the 10-speed automatic transmission. Of course, the GT/CS will come with the revised 5.0L V8, delivering 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque along with the rest of the mechanical features of the modern Mustang GT.
Where the GT California Special differs is in its design, with six features inside and out that allow this 2019 Mustang to stand apart from the other GT models.
1 – Like all of the California Special models before it, the 2019 Mustang GT/CS comes with a black grille.
2 – The familiar side strip with the GT/CS logo begins just behind the front wheels and runs along the doors, fading as it meets the side scoops.
3 – The side scoops are unique to the 2019 Mustang GT California Special
4 – The black rear taillight panel is adorned with a new California Special badge in red, and it looks great.
5 – The 2019 GT/CS gets unique wheels with a machined face and painted pockets.
6 – The interior features Miko suede-trimmed black seats with red contrast stitching and embroidered GT/CS logos.
In addition to those six unique features, the 2019 Ford Mustang GT/CS comes with some other features that are offered on other packages, such as the splitter from the GT Performance Pack 1.
Rev Matching Arrives for 2019
Also new for the Mustang GT California Special and all 2019 Mustangs with the 6-speed manual transmission is an advanced rev matching system. While skilled clutch-users are able to rev-match on their own, the 2019 Mustang GT takes the skill out of the equation, making for smoother shifts and improved performance.
