7 Reasons Why You Really Don't Want to Own the 2015 Hellcat Challenger

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the most powerful American production car ever and while this car has quickly become the unattainable object of desire for many muscle car lovers, there are 7 good reasons why you really don’t want to own the Hellcat Challenger – which should help make everyone who cannot afford it feel a little better.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is one mean looking muscle car and with a new supercharged 6.2L Hemi offering 707 horsepower and 650lb-ft of torque, this new super-Challenger is hard not to love. Even before the specs were announced for the Hellcat Hemi, this new Mopar muscle car had become a mainstay of desktop wallpapers from dorm rooms to the workplace and everything in between.

Unfortunately, while the Hellcat Challenger is surprisingly affordable for a car of this performance level, the price starting north of $60k makes it an unlikely purchase for most people. Some of those people feel bad about the fact that they cannot afford the most powerful American production car ever, so I put together 7 good reasons why you really don’t want the 707hp Challenger SRT Hellcat.

7 Reasons Why You Really Don't Want to Own the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

1. Dodge Challenger Hellcat Is Expensive – With a price starting at $60,990 for the manual transmission Hellcat Challenger and $61,390 for the automatic transmission, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat costs roughly double the price of the average modern muscle car.

2. It's Terrible in the Snow – Unless you live in an area where there is never any rain, snow or cold weather, the Hellcat Challenger is only going to be a reliable vehicle for half the year at best. The Challenger Hellcat set to the 700+ horsepower mode easily spins the tires at almost any speed on a warm, dry day so driving in the rain is tricky and driving in the snow would be little more than a comically frustrating experience. Even driving on a cold winter day where the roads are completely clear and dry, the simple fact that the tires and surface are so cold would make traction a nightmare. Some muscle cars can comfortably be driven year round – the Hellcat Challenger is not one of them.

3. You Will Spend a Fortune on Dodge Challenger Hellcat Tires – the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat comes with 275-40ZR20 Pirelli P Zero Nero tires all around and while they can be expertly used to get the big Challenger into the low 11s, it is also very, very easy to get the tires spinning. It is blissfully simple to smoke the tires and anyone who buys a Hellcat Challenger will most certainly spend some time roasting the rear tires. In looking up those tires online, I found a price of around $260 per piece – and that doesn’t include the cost of having them installed.

4. You Will Spend a Bigger Fortune on 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Gas – Chrysler expects that the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat will return around 20 miles per gallon on the highway, but you have to also consider that at wide open throttle, it burns through 1.5 gallons per minute – there is great potential for very poor fuel economy. Now, I would love burning every cent of that fuel cost, but buying, owning and driving the Hellcat every day while flexing its muscles is going to get very expensive in a hurry.

5. You Will Spend a Fortune on Insurance – Even if you are an older individual with a spotless driving record, the cost of insurance coverage on the most powerful American production car of all time is going to be very high. As for younger drivers, insuring a muscle car is expensive – insuring the most powerful muscle car ever will likely be astronomical.

6. Other Muscle Car Owners Will Hate You – Do you have friends who own a Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro or even another Dodge Challenger? If you get the Hellcat Challenger, you wont have those friends anymore, as they will quickly get tired of you stomping them and making them look bad. For the same reason average women hate supermodels – average muscle car owners will hate you when you own a Hellcat Challenger.

7. It Just Isn't for Everyone – Sadly, while it would be hard for many people to admit, a 707 horsepower street car simply isn’t for everyone. The Hellcat Challenger has so much power that when shifting into 4th gear on a road course at high speed, the back tires still break loose and spin. Starting from a stop and even giving the Hellcat Challenger a gentle jab of the throttle will spin the tires and bring the back end around in a big hurry if not handled correctly. It is easy for someone who has never driven a car like this to assume that they could drive it every day, but the Hellcat simply packs far too much power for the average driver to safely and responsibly handle.

DON'T MISS: Watch and Listen to the 707hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat in Action

As you can tell, some of these 7 reasons why you wouldn’t want to own a Hellcat Challenger are obvious and other are obviously a joke. In all reality, the 707hp Challenger is a remarkable marvel of modern American engineering so of course every gearhead would love to own one and hopefully my 7 reasons – as absurd as they may be – will help some of you feel better about the fact that you won’t be buying one anytime soon.

However, we can all dream…

Two Please, just ship them to this address. Insurance is cheap, I have the cash, gas is about $1/gallon. And 2 because, I'll need some to pal around with over here. Oh, sorry, the shipping address is Doha, Qatar!

Consider this when u get pulled over for burning rubber at a stop light your insurance will go up..all these cars there making with all the power..z06,viper,charger,Nissan gtr ect...speed limit 80 MPH in Texas..take it to the track well your insurance doesn't cover car when u wreck it..or you die in accident like that actor did with his buddy in his porshe ..if you buy one then move to Germany at least there you can run it at speed on the Autobahn..

Get and nice set and save yourself 30,000 put in twin turbos and eat the hellcats ass for dinner for about 1/2 the price

As the owner of a Hellcat Challenger I must clear up some of the 7 Reasons not to own one:

1 Expensive...Yes & No. Depends on your idea of expensive. At $65,000 plus $20,000 premium dealer
fee it isn't cheap. Plus tax: About $5,600, Gas Guzzler Fee $1,500 and any other dealer sales you would like to add.
2 Snow... Really?? Snow........That's just stupid. Rain is not an issue. Use the black 500 hp key fob
and go slow. Like any other car. The tires don't just spin when you touch the gas pedal.
3 Fortune on tires...My car came equipped with P Zero tires, not the Nero. If you want to blow thru them then slam the gas pedal and burn out every time you take off. If you drive like a normal person then they get about 15,000 to 20,000 miles of life.
4 Spend a fortune on gas... Put the red fob key in tune it to the track setting or sport setting and the gas gauge moves like the second hand on a clock. Use the black fob key set the tune to Eco and you get about 20 to 25 mpgs if you drive it like a normal car.
5 Spend a fortune on insurance... I'm 51 years old, male, no past tickets and I pay $128.50 a month thru State Farm for full coverage with a $500 deductible. So that's me..Yours may differ.
6 Other muscle car owners will hate you...Maybe...But why? As the saying goes "To each his own"
7 It's not for everyone...I totally agree. I am a past SRT owner and have owned high power muscle cars since my high school days. This is one bad ass crazy piece of automotive technology. If you don't respect it it will bite you in the ass as fast as you can imagine. But....If you respect it and drive it like it's designed it is the most fun you can imagine. As the saying goes "With great power comes great responsibility" That is a 100% accurate statement about this particular car.

I bought the 1st one to arrive at my home town. I payed 10,000 over MSRP. I am very happy with my HellCat. My wife loves it and drives it as a daily driver. I wouldn't mind paying 20,000 over MSRP either. My insurance premium is not high at all. It never snows here and rain is not a problem. Yes its always the red key in use. It feels awesome to be the owner of a 707 HP muscle car. My dream was to buy a Viper, but I am very satisfied with the HellCat. The comfort and technology in it is just amazing. But haters will always be haters.

Hello:

I got to Drive a Hellcat, and I am going to order one as soon as I see if the tires will be a bit wider for 2016. I'm 53 and have never bought a new car, but this will be the exception. Since I've always bought older cars I haven't spent that much money on them, and I keep them a long time. I have a 1st Gen Camaro (Pro-Touring) and a 1964 Corvette Grand Sport and a old 4X4 Suburban. This Challenger is the perfect car for me. At 6'3 I can actually sit in the back seat. Yes headroom is a bit cramped, but it does have a REAL backseat. With my wife we can go with another couple out for the evening and have room to spare, or by ourselves take a nice 3000 road trip as there is planty of room with the truck. The previous cars mentioned (Other than off road with the truck), while classic, fast and fun are, "course, unrefined and harsh to drive all the time" compared to the Hellcat. At 53, I also appreciate a great ride, so it doesn't beat you up everytime you get in it to go to the store.

You get a great ride for the 95% of the time your just going somewhere, and with a push of a button you have a Modern Red, White, and Blue, Fire Breathing, Obnoxiously Loud, In your Face, Real American Muscle Car that will kick the hell out of anything with 4 or 5 "REAL" seats, plus a "REAL" trunk. I don't even know why they compare it to the Mustang or the Camaro, it's an apples and oranges comparison. (.... and It will still kick their ass most of the time. :-) that's what so awesome about it)

It is a miracle car for the price, and it actually looks refreshingly un-governmentile, un-politically correct designed, where gas milage and emissions is all that is important. It looks cool and fast, and irresponsible, and all the other fun things gearheads like to be seen in, look at, and drive.
You can actually leave a restaurant and find your car in a parking lot without the use of your FOB.

It has "Style".

All the other cars from $20k - $100k look like silver or grey oval jelly beans. You can't tell any of them apart from the outside and they can cost some serious $$$$$$ to have a bland nothing for transportation.

Dodge knocked it out of the park with this car, I just hope they continue this attitude where many of the younger gearheads can have the same excitement we had back before Ralph Nader, and AL "Kill Joy" Gore were on the seen.

I would love to hear back from you all, and see how close my impression and reasoning is with yours.

Take care and keep on wrenching.

Ty

Thank you,
I'm also 53 and my dream car since I was a kid was to someday purchase a new Corvette. I chose to have a family instead and and when I was ready to buy one, I built a beautiful swimming pool to keep my kids party's and get togethers at my house. That was 8 years ago.
Now I've had my eyes on the new Challenger Hellcat 2016 for quite a while as the corvette I would like to have is in the six figure range. I have been searching on CarGurus nationwide because the dealers here in Miami fl. are a bunch of Crooks. I've found 6 new 2016 Cats with all the goodies for under $65K. I will be purchasing one next month. Thank you for your message as everyone is telling me that I'm waisting my money, I say it's either now or never.

Respectfully,

John Acosta

7 Real Reasons why you wrote this article.

1. Dear ME!!! 60,000 for a racecar is really expensive!

2. I have no throttle control.

3. I have no throttle control.

4. I have no throttle control.

5. Yeah you got me there. Insurance is always too expensive for a racecar. Because racecar.

6. Everyone will hate me cause I'm a douchebag and I tend to show off. Yep.

7. I agree. This car is definitely not for you. But it's OK because they make BMW's that I think would suit you much nice.

Rod Walden (not verified)    May 21, 2015 - 8:41PM

I have one and your right its horrible in the snow, that's why I live in Florida. As far as cars go its the best purchase I have ever made. I get a smile on my face everytime I crank it up. O yea, drove it on a short trip, with the cruise set at 78 I averaged
23.5 mpg. People were hanging out the Windows of their cars taking pictures.

Robert Taylor (not verified)    May 31, 2015 - 5:33PM

This car is an unbelievable piece of American craftsmanship. While I will not order one any time soon, price, insurance etc.is not an issue. But if you got the itch, I suggest you do your homework so you understand what your getting into. They are a lot of driving schools out there that can teach you how to handle this car if you want to really have fun with the beast. I have 4 classic muscle cars that I maintain, rebuild and restore myself that's enough $$$$ on cars. However, is this was not the case I would order one as a "weekend driver and respect it as investment grade, keep the miles and wear and tear down and keep it in a dry climate covered up." I would sign up for some driving courses that would teach me how to handle the car at Auto Cross racing (AC) events.

I thought the same thing about keeping it covered an taking it out on weekends.. But I can't do it!! His name is Cletus the Cat and he's my daily driver.. It's stupid how addicted one can get to a S Supercharged Hemi!!! I love my Hellcat, you would to!

sam novello (not verified)    June 8, 2015 - 1:57PM

My question is will the Tran's and Rear end handle the 707 hp if you wanted to bracket race it ?
Surly the dealership will no bye the computer chip that you have race it and then I assume they would not warranty it ? any one got a handle on the situation ?

Rod Walden (not verified)    June 9, 2015 - 10:13AM

This car comes with a great warranty. 5 year 100,000 mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, 3 year 36,000 mile Basic Limited Warranty, 5 year 100,000 mile Roadside Assistance; obviously there are limits, but Chrysler advertised the car to go fast and be a daily driver.

Matt (not verified)    June 12, 2015 - 3:20PM

I'd be willing to bet your friends will laugh at you because they can still beat you on the street stoplight to stoplight. Remember, the Hellcat has the same rear width tires as the 222 less hp SRT8. 0-60 in 3.5 is the time the car magazine testers got from over 10 launches most likely and also Pirelli's aren't even the best tire brand. You can probably get better launch times with the black key vs the red. 0-60 in the mid to high 4s is probably more realistic.

Jake (not verified)    June 14, 2015 - 6:31PM

It does not cost double what the performance models cost of other Pony Cars; So that statement is false the Gt500 model of the mustang costs a ton of money and so does the ZL1 Camaro.they are both listed at 55k. So that statement was a load of shit. Second your buying a pony car of course its not gonna drive good in the snow, that is not the purpose of the car.. third your friends wont hate you, if they love cars they would want to go for a ride in it if anything. The Tire of course will cost you more because they are high end, you cant put any tires on a car like that. So in return i have pretty much summed up that you are probably a Prius driving pussy who should probably never write articles about cars because it is biased strictly to practicality and not what people who are actually buying this cars are looking at.

DAMN STRAIGHT!!! My friend who bought this doesn't beat my decked out 2012 premium 5.0 mustang. He barely starts to pull away from me until after 100mph, so your stupid comment about other muscle cars being beat is pure bullshit. Just because it has a bit more horsepower doesn't mean it's faster. It's very heavy with that big engine and most people who own one don't know how to properly drive them or get up on them. You can't just floor it and go in this type of car, all that does is burn out the tires in this beast.
In fact, my buddy who bought it thinking he would beat everyone else is usually left pissed off and in my rear view mirror because I'm much lighter and take off much faster.
As comment above me states, you know jack shit about cars!

Tyler (not verified)    June 17, 2015 - 7:57PM

How about this is America where people are free to buy what ever they want. If your jealous then it's insecurity. Can't afford it don't get it. Gas mileage is bad don't buy it. This is a vehicle for the men and women who enjoy the freedom of the drive and if it comes at a cost well it's their money not yours. Sounds like a stupid arrival to me we are all adults who should know what we can afford and how to handle our selfs if not it's not the cars fault.

............. This Has to be the dumbest reasons NOT to have the best car in the world. Ha I hope this a sarcastic article.

Victor West (not verified)    June 30, 2015 - 3:39PM

This is true, I have two Charger Hellcats and a Challenger Hellcat and its true, Mustang Supersnakes and Camaro SS, Camaro Z28 and the Zl1 hate me, but who cares that they are in my mirrors. I have also found out that Vetts and Vipers hate me and I have 2 Vipers and I hate Hellcats when I drive my Vipers......

Mike Hunt (not verified)    July 13, 2015 - 1:25AM

I've never heard of a car that offers this kind of hp to come standard with ALL SEASON TIRES. Wtf? Are they high? Even the summer Pirelli's suck. Opt for Michelin Pilots and you will be much better off. Most average Joe's driving this will get embarrassed at a stoplight because all they will be doing is spinning the tires getting a 0-60 in the same time as a SRT. Dodge's claimed 0-60 is on aclose prepped course and done multiple times.

arthur (not verified)    September 18, 2015 - 3:26PM

You know nothing about cars if you have the money like i do to buy a Dodge challenger hellcat and if you like it buy it do not listen to stupid people like this they know nothing about cars and they are jealous sick people this person probably owns a piece of shit car , but if you tell him hey want to drive the hellcat he will say yes straight away and after nice car.

Salvatore (not verified)    October 6, 2015 - 11:56AM

This post is stupid on so many different levels. For how much power you're getting for 60k is an amazing steal. Also any muscle car is not good in the snow. This post is outrageous. It sounds like the writer had something against dodge or again the hellcat. If someone were to buy the car I don't think they would of bought the car to drive it in the snow, or I think they would know that the gas mileage would not have been the best.

El CharGerSon (not verified)    November 22, 2015 - 2:45AM

Hi Mr. 7reasons/priusdriver where you get this bad reasons from!!!!????????

1. If you love car's regardless muscle or imports you know that you never stop putting money, sweat, blood into your car, if you just an luxery guy you will "sPEnD" more for example don't chevy top LTz2 cost up to 54 on pick-ups or tahoe depending if you liked the special edition or lets say..... A Cadillac???? Aren't they up to 80k and eacalades 6.0???

2.
I own a charger 5.7 MopAr and like i said before you never stop spending money the first year i baught it with bad suspension and chipped 22" i baught it with 94k miles for a reason.... Which even though i previously had own a 3.5 version same color a year newer and was interested in a single cab to swamp engine for a 6.2 i tested the charger after they refilled 1tire with air and i notice that this wasnt any regular 5.7 the engine was worked on and the 7 speakers with im guessing by California concept as the logo badge said but i replace the shocks into srt8 witch lowerd my r/t and even replaced the rims from wider "18 to unique "22" to my black powdered coated "20" crysler srt8 rims and still baught new toyos and repiped the exhaust system from magnaflow, proxies and repaint the car matt black with satin finish all in the first years i spent 7k while making 450 payments n 205 insurance (23yr old) replace the fan, radiator and water/gas pump also professional 16 spark plugs even breaks n rotors oh and even baught it real black leader 2pcs to releather it by a professional and all that cause im not willing to staying stranded for a mino fixes....
SO YEAH I KNOW I CAN BUY IT IF I CAN SPEND MORE THAN 12K A YEAR IN CAR WITHOUT INSURANCE COST....

3.
INSURANCE IS NOT AS BAD AS A GUY WITH DUI's witch many have and pay the same with full cover newer car

4. My charger gives me 18 in town highways and on opened roat can go up to 20 but in town 12 and yes when i replace ($374) my 2 new back tires in 8 months i decided to leave my old ones wire's showing i then went out and burnout and spend about 20 secs on 4 different places (precautions) i heard my warning light and it was my gas tank that dropped from just above 1/4 to low while gas was $4.22g

5.
You can caliblate your throttle with your peddle from factory and car return when removing battery for the computer resets all the systems so your car can be adjust with only your car key and a slow steady foot depending how faster response you want.

Finally #6
Really you think muscle guys would think r they would beat the friend with hellcat that could push the full 707hp???? Or bragg that they seen there friend push them??? Or the girls admiring and flirting, WHEN YOU GET 7 REAL REASONS TRY REPOSTING THE TITLE CAUSE ANY OF THE OBOVE ARE CAUSE IF YOU LOVE MUSCLE CARS THEN YOU PROBABLY IS THERE AND NONE OF ABOVE ARE ANY GOOD REASONS CAUSE IF YOU DRIVE A MUSCLE CAR THAN IM SURE YOU CAN MAKE AND AFFORD ONE WITH TROUBLE FREE FOR AT LEAST 3yrs SO YEAH IF YOU LOVE IT AND WANT IT GO FOR IT!!!

I did and wouldn't trade mine even for the CHARGER SRT8 HELLCAT (my choice in hellcat trim) i failed in love with mine and built modified it till i was satisfied with even the hid running even fog lights watts to the bumper lip to that perfect crisp sound on the exhaust when its ignites to the way it sounds when accelerating to when aproaching a red light you start decenting velocity also to the intimidating look it has with %20 tint all around for that compliment it gives to the special paint job and that curiosity instinct people get when they are trying to make my face or even skin color rather than with that limo tint that you just see black and wouldn't compliment the paint.... One of a kind and for sure notting out there can look exactly or better, OWN IT, DREAM IT, MODIFIED IT, to represent who you are as for it will even when left untouched it shows your way of life.

Najim (not verified)    November 25, 2015 - 1:38AM

Well for "6. Other Muscle Car Owners Will Hate You" and "7. It Just Isn't for Everyone" do not make sense!

I don't care if they hate to own a car that will eat their cars, the car is for me, for piece of my mind.
And then you have two keys, Red and Black, give the black one to anyone else (that you trust of course), as we all know the black key reduces the power from 707hp to 5XXhp.

freighty (not verified)    December 9, 2015 - 8:51AM

Problem 1, same as other top of line from gm and ford, 2 drives fine with snowtires, 3only if your an idiot, 4 bullshit 15-22mpg, 5 bullshit no more thenany other car unless your a kid or have a horribly driving record, 6 true, 7 bullshit

People don't know how to drive in snow with rear wheel drive cars. Live in New England, you might learn a thing or two. Plus, who would take a $65,000 car out in the salted roads?
