While some people questioned Fiat’s move to begin selling the Dodge Journey in the European market as the Fiat Freemont, skeptics should be surprised to learn that the Freemont has been the bestselling vehicle in its Italian segment for the past two years. Based on that success, Fiat has come up with the Freemont Black Code trimline that will serve as the high end package for the sporty crossover.
As you would expect, the Fiat Freemont Black Code adds lots of black trim inside and out. On the exterior, the Black Code package adds a gloss black grille with black filler, black headlight bezels, black fog light bezels, black cladding along the bottom of the vehicle all around, gloss black 19” wheels, gloss black exterior mirrors and black B- and C-pillars. On the inside, the Black Code Freemont sports a set of plush black heated leather seats with white accent stitching, silver trim along the doors, console and dash, three zone climate control, keyless enter and go, parking assist and a navigation system that works via the 8.4” infotainment touch screen. The Black Code models also come with a premium sound system with 368 watts of amplified power through 6 speakers and a subwoofer.
The Fiat Freemont Black Code features the same drivetrain options as the less expensive Freemonts, beginning with the buyer’s choice of either the standard 2.0L diesel engine with 170 horsepower or the Pentastar V6 with 280 horsepower. Those buyers who pick the 2.0L MultiJet Diesel can pick between front wheel drive with a 6 speed manual transmission or all wheel drive and a 6 speed automatic transmission while the Pentastar powered models are available only with all wheel drive and the 6 speed automatic gearbox.
While the Black Code name might not work for the Dodge Journey, there is no doubt that this is a great looking package for the Fiat Freemont that would probably prove to be popular with the US crowd as well provided that they came up with a name that fit a bit better…perhaps like the Blacktop package that is available for other Dodge models? In any case, the Freemont Black Code is slated to go on sale in Europe during the first quarter of 2014 – bringing a new level of luxury to the roomy, sporty Dodge Journey in its European form.
The Fiat Freemont has already been the bestselling vehicle in its segment in Italy and with the Italian preference for things that are sporty and luxurious – there is a good chance that this new premium Black Code package will help European Journey sales even more.
