Jaguar recalls 2010 XF and XK models for a power steering fire risk

The vehicles affected in this 2010 Jaguar XK and XF recall were all built between June 27, 2009 and March 10, 2010, with 6,085 vehicles affected in total. The cause for this new Jaguar recall is a power steering pipe that has been coated in zinc-nickel plating that fails to meet Jaguar’s corrosion protection requirements.

Jaguar has discovered that over time, the high pressure power steering line’s protective coating does not prevent corrosion over time. When the corrosion material fails, the power steering line can develop tiny pin holes that can allow the power steering fluid to leak. In the best case scenario, owners of the 2010 Jaguar XF and XK could lose power steering which makes the car far more difficult to maneuver and in the worst case scenario, the highly pressurized power steering fluid can spray onto hot items under the hood like the exhaust manifolds. When the power steering spray hits the exhaust manifold or any other high temperature items under the hood, a fire can begin and with a steady stream of fuel being added to the fire from the leaking power steering line – it could be a fire that is very hard to extinguish.

This Jaguar XK/XF recall is set to begin on or around April 11th, at which time owners of the 2011 model year luxury cars will be asked to return to their local Jaguar/Land Rover dealership where the power steering lines will be replaced by new lines coated in a proper corrosion-prevention material.
