The crew at Saleen Automotive has just announced its newest package for the Ford Mustang and in honor of the 30th anniversary of the dominating 1987 Saleen racing team, the company is offering a street version and a track version of the 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition Mustang – with power levels of 730 and 750 horsepower.
While the Saleen name is best known for customized Ford Mustangs and the S7 supercar, the Saleen name was originally known best for motorsports success. More specifically, Steve Saleen’s road racing Mustang team was a dominant force back in the 1980s and it was that motorsport success – much of which was centered around the Ford Mustang – which eventually led to the first Saleen packages for road-going Mustangs.
The 1987 racing season was particularly special for Saleen, with the racing program taking home the Driver’s Championship, the Manufacturer’s Championship, the Team Championship and the SCCA Escort Endurance Championship with their yellow-and-white Ford Mustang. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of that historic 1987 racing season, Saleen Automotive has rolled out the new 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition for the Ford Mustang, with both street and track versions.
The Saleen 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition Ford Mustang
The 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition package from Saleen can be upfitted to any 2015-2017 Ford Mustang GT and while details are short right now – we know that these Mustangs will feature some significant performance upgrades.
Most notably, the 5.0L V8 will be fitted with with a 3.2L liquid cooled supercharger, which will lift the output to 730 horsepower for the street version an 750hp for the track version. There will also be a new exhaust system included in the package, as well as a new shifter and the return of the Racecraft suspension setup.
As we can see in the Saleen artwork above, the 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition Ford Mustang will have a unique body kit, a new hood design, package-specific white wheels and the familiar yellow, white and black livery – including plenty of badges inside and out. We do know that the Saleen 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition Mustangs will be riding on General Tire G-MAX RS tires, which is fitting considering that the 1987 Saleen race car was sponsored by and won on General Tires.
“We are extremely proud to introduce the first summer tire for General with such a legendary brand as Saleen,” stated Travis Roffler, director of marketing for General Tire. “The new ultra-high performance G-MAX RS is a tire that we have been anticipating for a several years. Our dealers have asked for it and we know the market is ready for it. This new Saleen Mustang is a perfect match for the G-MAX RS.”
Those who want to spend more time on the track can opt for the aforementioned Saleen 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition Ford Mustang Track Package, which deletes the rear seat and adds a 4-point roll bar, a safety harness, an upgraded cooling system and likely an upgrade brake setup.
While we don’t have full details now, Saleen has promised to roll out the full details within the month, so it shouldn’t be long before we know everything that there is to know about the Saleen 30-Year Championship Commemorative Edition Ford Mustang.
