The Ford Racing Facebook page has been teasing this incredible grudge race between the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet drag car and Tanner Foust’s Rockstar Energy Drink Ford Fiesta Global RallyCross car over the past few days and around 11am this morning – the full video hit the web. Joining Tanner Foust and his brightly colored Fiesta race car is legendary drag racing instructor and NHRA legend Roy Hill, who is responsible for driving the supercharger Mustang drag car.
As can be expected, the video begins with Roy Hill and Tanner Foust exchanging some humorous pleasantries where Hill points out that Tanner’s roof is all dented up – at which point the video revisits the rollover crash that pretty much ended his day at the Global RallyCross Charlotte event. Once the time to talk about whose car is faster came to an end, the real action got started as we get a great look at the Cobra Jet Mustang doing a big nasty burnout while Foust and his all wheel drive Fiesta wait patiently at the starting line.
While it seems like an easy choice to guess which one of these high performance Ford race cars is going to be the first to cross the finish line, we should look at the fact that Tanner Foust’s Fiesta rallycross car is a far cry from any Fiesta on the road today. This Fiesta weighs around 2,900lbs and packs a turbocharged engine that delivers somewhere in the area of 600 horsepower to all four wheels via a full time all wheel drive system. This car is capable of dashing from 0 to 60 in under two seconds (1.9 seconds, to be exact) and that makes it one of the quickest race cars in the world so it doesn’t seem to be out of the realm of possibility that the GRC Fiesta could actually beat the Cobra Jet Mustang. When the race begins, both cars launch side by side and there seems to be a chance that the little Fiesta could keep up or maybe even win – but that didn’t last long.
In the end, the mighty Mustang Cobra Jet racer handed Tanner’s turbocharged Ford Fiesta a pretty sound beating with Roy Hill turning in a time of 8.99 at 152.24 miles per hour while the offroad purposed Fiesta ran a 10.59 at 127.88 miles per hour. Foust points out after the race that his Fiesta was hitting the rev limited in high gear during the latter stages of the race and when you consider the type of racing done in the GRC, it makes sense that his car would have far more low end acceleration than top end speed. This makes Tanner’s Fiesta less than idea for drag racing and while a time of 10.59 is still mighty impressive – it is nowhere near fast enough to battle the Cobra Jet.
When you watch the video below, make sure to crank up your speakers as both the Ford Fiesta GRC race car and the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet sound absolutely amazing in very different ways. This video does a great job of showing off these two vastly different Ford race cars while also showing that the mighty Mustang is still the king of the Ford performance world.
