The new Ford Ranger is going to be quite a bit different from the past Ranger we knew in the U.S. market. Here are three things that Ranger fans should be prepared for when the new truck arrives.

The 2019 U.S.-spec Ford Ranger is just months away from dealer lots. As the all-new truck gets closer to production, there are a few important changes that fans of the current Ford Ranger (1997-2011) should be aware of. Here is a quick rundown of the biggest differences between the older truck and the new.

2019 Ford Ranger - It's Way Bigger
The prior Ranger was a compact truck. The new 2019 Ranger isn't. It is a mid-sized truck. The original Ranger in 1997 had a length from 184-198 inches. The new Ranger will likely have a length as long as 213 inches. The prior generations of the Ranger had widths as narrow as 69 inches and as wide as 71 inches. The new Ranger with mirrors folded out will have a width of as much as 80 inches. Folded, the width will likely be about 75 inches. Those looking forward to the new Ranger should be prepared to find that the truck has grown significantly. Park next to a new Chevy Colorado to get a feel for the new size.

2019 Ford Ranger - Fuel Economy Technology You Can't Delete
One of the great things about compact trucks from the good old days was that they could be relatively basic vehicles. Those days are long gone. Every new Ranger will have standard auto stop/start technology. Your truck is going to shut off at red lights, stop signs, and in traffic and then restart when you move your foot from the brake to the power pedal. The fuel economy of the new Ranger has not yet been announced by FuelEconomy.Gov, but it will very likely be better than the V6-equipped Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

2019 Ford Ranger - Safety Technology You Can't Delete
Your new Ranger is also going to stop on its own in emergency situations. Forward collision mitigation with auto emergency braking is going to be mandatory in a few years, but every automaker is making the technology standard on every new vehicle design already. The Ranger is no different. IIHS has proven that this technology dramatically reduces rear-ending crashes. If you are not a fan of this safety tech, look on the bright side. The teen texting in the Ranger behind you will also be driving a truck with the technology.

These 3 big changes will all apply to both the consumer and also the fleet versions of the Ranger (we checked).

The new 2019 Ford Ranger goes into production late this year.

When Ford started building their new Ranger for the world market they didn't adapt it for the U.S. because it's size was so close to the F150 that they couldn't see a strong enough market for the slightly smaller truck. But since then they saw that they were missing out on potential buyers who wanted a truck, but not one as HUGE and thirsty as the F-Series monsters. Buyers who like having a practical pickup bed, but don't need the industrial strength of a work truck or for major towing duties. So this Ranger will be only available with the turbo 2.3L 4 cylinder engine, good for 280HP/310TQ in the Explorer, and 10 speed auto only. I suspect that with the next gen Mustang getting a hybrid option, that it will come to the new Ranger in a few years as well. I am glad that Ford is not giving up this smaller pickup market to it's competitors, however I do miss mini-pickups in the U.S. as that whole market has shifted to crossovers today.

Where is it made? Thailand i heard? Go Ford Go. Not made in the USA, that is right! That would piss of Trump. And Trump thought the imports were actually Toyota and friends. The domestic names are the biggest imports America has. The rednecks should inform themselves better before they put that sticker "Lost a job yet, keep buying foreign" behind their trucks!

Hey Dups, Thanks for checking in. Just to nip the confusion in the bud, the truck we are discussing in this story is the New Ford Ranger for the U.S. market. It will be made in the Michigan Assembly Plant. Ford builds the F-150 in the U.S. as well. The Ford Rangers that it builds in Thailand are the ones that it sells in the Asia/Pacific market. Ford also has plants that serve other global markets. Here in the U.S. the 25% import duty that President Kennedy proposed and President Johnson instituted is still in effect. Every pickup now sold in the U.S. market is built in North America and Ford's are built here in the U.S.

Great news about the new Ford Ranger. A buddy of mine been itching to get the new one. He'll come over to finish the installation of new rack and suspension we ordered from 4WheelOnline for the Raptor project. Those features would be the hot topic at the garage.

There is no option for a standard cab and none for a manual transmission. Why would I want a small truck if it has nothing but big truck features?
