Honda AC Failed? A Condenser Failure May Be Covered Under An Extended Warranty Program

Honda America has had a tough time with AC condensers in recent years. Here is why if your Honda's AC condenser has failed the cost of the repair may be covered

Honda is extending the warranty on AC condensers to a full ten years for select models like its Civic. Torque News expects that this warranty extension may spread to other models. If you own a Clarity, Accord, Insight, or other Honda model and your AC condenser fails outside of the vehicle's 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty period, you should visit a dealer and ask if Honda will cover the needed repairs.

This is not a recall. It is important to understand that recalls are related to safety, and a condenser may not fall under that category. The number of owners reporting condenser failures seems to be at a high point for models built from 2018 through 2020. Here is what one 2018 Honda Accord owner reported to CarComplaints.com: "It was warm outside today, so on my lunch break at work I went to go get food, got in the car to find no AC. The A/C seats were blowing cold air, but not the vents.I went to Honda, he said the systems are separate. He confirmed the AC was not working. They found out that all the refrigerant was leaking out. He said during manufacturing it must’ve gotten caught on something. AC system had to be replaced. Under warranty."

What To Do If Your Honda's AC Condenser Fails
If your Honda's AC condenser fails we suggest taking the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. Ask that it be repaired under Honda's extended warranty program. If the dealer declines to cover the cost, phone Honda's owner hotline and ask for help. The number is (800) 999-1009. Ask if there are any technical service bulletins (like this one)describing condenser issues for your vehicle, and if Honda can cover your repair costs. If they agree, Honda will work with the dealer and you will have saved hundreds.

If Honda declines, consider taking the vehicle to an independent repair shop. You may pay less there than at a Honda dealer. It is important to get a detailed receipt and to retain that receipt in case Honda later settles a class action suit and pays owners for repairs already conducted.

What Is An AC Condener?
An air conditioning condenser is one of the key parts of any HVAC cooling system, Replacing an AC condenser in a Honda can cost between $500 and $900 at a dealer. Independent shops may charge less.

How Do I Know If My Condenser Fails?
If your Honda's AC is not blowing cold, it could be a minor issue. The first thing to check is your engine's coolant level. You can see how to do that in your manual. If it is not a simple problem, the AC compressor may have a leak that let the refrigerant levels drop to a point where the system cannot blow cold.

My Honda CRV 2018 A/c suddenly started blowing hot air and checked with dealer compressor leak and it costs CAD 2300 + tax. do n't know if HOnda canada covers it.

Just got a call from the shop about my 2016 pilot that started blowing hot air. Live in Austin TX & its no joke , 106°outside. Compressor & condenser. The lowest price would be $3300. That is crazy. I have read about Accord & Civic but not much on the Pilot as far as extended warranty?

we need a class action law suite to include compressors too. the told me my compressor is also out. it's all related to a faulty AC system but honda only covers condensor ..

I just took my 2017 Honda Civic in for the A/C not blowing cold on driver side. Honda will state that there is a diagnosis fee which was about $350 which would be waived if it was the condenser. Diagnosis came back condenser, compressor, and evaporator. Now under the warranty Honda states they will replace the condenser but they will not replace the condenser without replacing the compressor and evaporator which would cost $2800. Honda really needs to figure something out with this warranty because I just want the to change the condenser nothing else and they won't do it because of the other parts. Good luck Honda you are going to lose a lot of your customers this way.

This is exactly what happened to my 2018 Honda Accord. Thank God my boyfriend had tried to fix the issue and done some research prior to taking the car in. Us knowing about the known condenser issues others were having most likely saved me hundred’s of dollars.

I own a 2017 Honda Civic. At 21k miles, the A/C stopped working. I took it to a Honda dealership and they said the compressor had failed. They wanted close to 2K fix. I was outraged. I bought my Honda as they are supposed to be so reliable. A/C compressors are supposed to last the lifetime of a car for 10-15 years., not at 21K miles!!! I did some research and discovered that Honda issued a Technical Service Bulletin 19-091 extending the A//C warranty to 10 years, but, only for the condenser!! If the compressor dies, too bad!! The condenser probably caused the compressor to go bad, but, Honda does NOT CARE. Honda does NOT deserve their reputation as being some of the best vehicles made with years of reliable service. I am sure lesser rated car makers, such as Ford and Chevrolet still have their A/C's working at 21k miles. I have a serious medical condition that causes me to have severe heat intolerance. I actually had a heat seizure driving my car. My 2017 Honda Civic with 21k miles is dangerous for my health!!! Honda needs to be sued AGAIN over the A/C issue with 2016-2019 Honda Civics!!!!

I have a 2018 civic. In Sept 2021, my ac started blowing hot air. I took it in to the dealer, and the condenser and the evaporator were leaking. They said only the condenser was covered and that the leak in the evaporator was a coincidence. $1600 to replace evaporator. This month, not even year later, my ac stops working again. This time it's the condenser and the compressor. They said the leak in the compressor is again a coincidence and want $1400 for the repair. Nevermind the fact that they replaced the defective condenser with a new defective condenser. I currently have a case through Honda customer service, but if they refuse to cover the repeated repairs, I will be contacting the Department of Consumer Affairs in California (dca.ca.gov), the Secretary of the State of California ([email protected]), and a lemon law lawyer ([email protected]). We will now have trouble selling the car due to the known issues with the ac. Maybe if enough of us make noise, Honda will actually recall their unreliable vehicles.

My condenser failed twice in 1 year and I was expected to pay for the collateral damage both times. I emailed a business letter to Honda customer service and cc'd the california secretary of state and the vice president of Honda. I quoted their technical service bulletin # 19-091, that states they are aware of their defectivs ac systems. Informed them they could either pay for the repairs or reimburse me for the car. I have owned from new a 2018 Honda CRV EX-L which only has 14,948 miles on the clock. My a/c stopped working last week so I took it to the local dealership. They paid for an Uber to get me home and would contact me when the problem was diagnosed. Next day we hear that the compressor, clutch and hose would all need replacing for $2,750. My husband said this was ridiculous on a newish vehicle with such low mileage on an a/c which has probably only been used for 8 months over its lifetime. The service "advisor" said he would speak to his manager and Honda and get back to us. Meanwhile I did some research and found this page, so we had some ammunition if they came back to say they would not help. We called them for an update the following day and was told that Honda would pay 80% of the repair, leaving us 20% ($558.85) to pay. I feel that it should have been covered 100% according to all the comments here, but I was pleased to get Honda to admit some ownership to the problem. Maybe there will be a class action taken out, so I will keep my receipts, etc in anticipation.

I own a Honda Fit 2019 and around sep of 2022 I noticed a rattle when I would turn of course I live in Puerto Rico and AC a must have, and I paid no mind to it and continued, around mid October 2022 this time i was not making the rattle while I was turning it started happening while I was accelerating so I said the cars fucked I went to a independent mechanic and he told me it was the compressor so I took it to an AC tech and he told me it would cost me around $550-$1000, now fast forward to today December 11 I went to turn on my window defogger and turned ac it stalled my car i am freaking out will update as soon as I take it to Honda

I have a 2018 Hondy Civic EX. My AC stopped working. I took it to the dealer and was told that my condenser was not working and in order for them to replace it, under the extended warranty, they also need to replace the condenser evaporator. They have estimated $2872.09 for the job. Any advice on what I should do?

I live upstate N.Y. I have 2019 civic was leaving for Nashville. When I left the a.c. was blowing hot air. When I got to Nashville (800 miles) no sir I went to hond a dealer. I had to pay $160 to diagnose problem. Results were condenser and compressor were leaking.$1800 to fix it and this is with the warranty applied. Could not afford it so I had to drive it back home no ac.I live North we do not use as to often here the use on this part is very little. I am trading it in and going to toyot a or American never had a problem before. Honda is dead to me

I have 2016 honda pilot elite , 66700 miles . I have had it to Honda 3 times for AC not working. I was told bad consensus. My AC is not working for 4 the time, told condensor has leak. Honda dealer told me not under warranty.

Same problem here. Condenser is bad. Under extended warranty. The Evaporator is bad as well but they are trying to get about $2500 from me to fix that and not willing to fix the condenser by itself.
Was someone able to reach out to Honda to get this covered?

I own a 2018 Honda accord with under 50k miles. The ac stopped working some time ago. I brought it to a mechanic and said, oh we can’t fix that our machine doesn’t fit your motor. So I called Honda, where I originally leased it, they said oh yes we know there’s an issue but you have to pay us $300 to diagnose a problem you already know is on going. Then I called Honda and they said oh yes you’re under manufacture warranty and then she started to back peddle because she knew she was telling me something she probably shouldn’t have I asked for an email she would not email me anything in writing I asked for a supervisor and of coarse, no one was available. I asked for a call back. I called another dealership in the beginning of me trying to work it out., again deadend. I find it unacceptable that Honda is making the consumer do ALL the legwork.

2019 Accord. AC condesor has been repaired 3 times by 2 dealerships. Broke again. I have literally never turned on the AC in May and had it blow cold. Tried for the 4th time and the service manager gave me such an attitude that I walked out.

My AC just stopped working on my 2021 Honda Touring CRV. I was so annoyed. The vehicle is not even 2 years old yet!!! Have an appointment this Saturday and I am expecting this to be fully covered or else they are going hear me going Jersey on them! I also have the extended warranty we shall see what happens. Not a happy camper right now.

I went to Honda in costa mesa ca and they told me to bring it in so I did they said it will be around 200 to look at it ok fine we paid it but gor a pho e call 2000.00 to fix it i was rols that if i dont fix it other problems will happen, ask if they could fix part thats under warranty they said no tou have to pay 2000.00 I said no we don't have money to fix it right now after I pick car up car warranty recall cleard a d then called ask for a copy of paper said no when I call the number for recall not helpfull at all they don't want to pay for anything ..I quest I need to get a Ford car they treat customers much better 2.time I had to go to Honda didn't like it not nice people I felt them trying to make money off us I will be reporting this to anyone e I can im not going to let this go

The air conditioner on my 2017 Civic stopped working. The coolant had leaked out. The dealership tried to charge my $800 to fix that. They said the part with the extended warranty was different than my part, but that's bullshit. When they changed the coolant, they increased the pressure and neither part could handle that higher pressure. I complained and they refunded most of the cost.

Now my son's 2017 Fit has a similar problem and the battle with Honda is starting all over again. If this doesn't go well, we're a Toyota family from here on out.

Honda needs to make this shit right for everyone who bought what were supposed to be reliable vehicles..

I have a 2020 Civic that had the AC go out for the 3rd time now. HOA is supposedly not able to procure parts to fix the AC as there is a "global shortage" that word was used countless times. So they are pretty much telling me that I get to drive around in 105F temperatures and to live with it for who knows when. I find this such a shady move by HOA and this will be the last Honda vehicle I will purchase.

I drive a 2019 Honda Accord EX and the AC wasn't putting out cold air last week, even after 30 minutes of highway driving. Upon returning home, I called my local dealer, explained the issue, and made an appointment for a diagnostic for the next morning.

After two hours, the service writer came over to tell me that they suspect it is a bad AC condenser and that the good news is that this is covered by the extended warranty (as noted in this article). I had never known about it until this point - and found your article after approving the work. Good to know that the warranty is good for 10 years in case it happens again. The service writer said that, if another AC issue happens in the next few months, they would see if something else went wrong. If that happens, I can only hope that it will be no charge to me.

2019 Honda Accord Hybrid

I can't believe how many folks have had such bad experiences with dealerships. I feel for all of you. A few months ago, my a/c stopped blowing cold air after it made some loud a/c type hissing sounds. Took it to my Honda dealer, and they told me right away if it was the condenser, the warranty had been extended to 10 years. It was indeed the condenser, and they replaced it at no charge.

For anyone in the area, it's Ocean Honda in Burlingame, CA.

I have a 2019 civic touring. The air stopped working in 2022, and they replaced the condenser. The new one worked until about 3 weeks ago,when the cold air once again failed...just in time for our massive heat wave. Since the extended warranty applies to 2022 models, I'm assuming the replacement condenser is also covered. I am concerned that the original failure sent metal fragments through the system and now will never be able to rely on the air working properly unless they replace the entire system. I'd appreciate any thoughts about my concerns and the likelihood they will deal with the problem honestly.
