Mazda announced today that the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will have a base price starting at around $25K. This is pretty much what a previous generation, 2015 Miata cost, so fans may be pleased to hear that number. Mazda is also quick to point out that the price is about what a Miata cost when it was first released if one accounts for the value of the dollar.
2016 Mazda Miata Trims
Mazda will offer three trims in the US market. The base Miata will be called Sport. The Miata with added performance equipment will be called the Club. Those looking for leather seating and other amenities will opt for the Grand Touring. These three levels closely match the way the Miata has been being sold for some time now. Some new features found on the base model Miata include a 6-speed manual transmission, leather-wrapped steering wheel, LED headlights, Bluetooth phone and audio and a USB audio input.
In a press release today, Rod McLaughlin, MX-5 vehicle line manager for Mazda North America explained the trims, saying, "The Sport model is for those desiring a pure, lightweight, unadulterated wind-in-the-hair driving experience. MX-5 Club is for those seeking a more aggressive appearance and driving experience and Grand Touring models are for loyal MX-5 owners who seek premium amenities and a driving experience that only MX-5 can deliver."
Expect a Club to have a price near $29K, and a Grant Touring 2016 Miata to top out near $32K. If the power retractable hard-top returns it will likely have a price adder of about $1500. Overall the good news is that the Miata has changed but the price really hasn’t.
