No 2016 diesel Tacoma coming - Toyota explains why

Fans of the Tacoma in the N. American market want a diesel engine. Here’s the final word on why they will not be getting one.

Fans of diesel trucks hoping that the 2016 Toyota Tacoma might finally be the year one comes are going to be disappointed yet again. This week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Toyota’s Chief engineer for the Tacoma and Tundra explained in plain English why the company does not plan to offer a Tacoma diesel.

No Diesel 2016 Tacoma

At NIAS Automobile’s Mark Nordeloos did the interview that made it all crystal clear. Interviewing Toyota’s Mike Sweers, he asked, “What is Toyota’s stance on diesel engines for the U.S. pickup truck market?” Rather than dodge the question or leave it vague so that Tacoma owners can continue to pine away for a diesel, Sweers said “The difficulty with the diesel is LEV III [emissions standards]. The difficulty is the cost-to-benefit relationship. Everybody loves diesel in trucks. The downside is the after-treatment systems can add $3,000 or more. It starts becoming cost prohibitive, especially in this segment, to pay a premium for both the engine and after-treatment system. That’s the struggle we have. We build a lot of diesel trucks, just not in this country. If I develop a diesel system for our country and I spend a huge amount of money to do that, I won’t see a return on the investment. That’s what we’ve struggled with.”

THINK ABOUT IT: How many more Tacomas could Toyota sell if it offered a diesel in the U.S.?

2016 Toyota Tacoma is All-New
Sweers and Nordeloos discussed the diesel topic a bit further, and we encourage our readers to click over and read this great interview. Other great questions include a contrast and comparison overview of the differences between the Tacoma and Hilux. Our favorite part of the interview is at the beginning where Sweers explains just how new this Tacoma is. Many other outlets incorrectly assume that because it looks similar to the outgoing 2015 it is not a full update. As Sweers puts it the only common part shared between the two generations are “Maybe a seatbelt bracket.”

I am totally disappointed I have waited as long as I can . I have to have a heavy diesel for farming my pick Toyota but there not taking care of there consumers yes of coarse the price would be more that's because we expect more from Toyota . Did you here anyone complain did you ask do a survey? Really I think more objective should have been put into this before you put it in the wash!!!

What a ridiculous excuse for not bringing diesel to their North American trucks. They could have owned the light truck market but instead they are handing it to their competitors on a silver platter.
People will not wait for Toyota to get their sh!t together. Instead they will buy from anyone but Toyota. Great move!

Hey no problem Toyota. I was really hoping you would step up but a Colorado diesel will do just fine.

I have Ford F350 7.3 diesel 4x4 trucks that do the job for my businesses, but they handle crappy, not too reliable, very uncomfortable, and are just pigs. I also have a 1996 Toyota T100 4x4 with 325,000 miles. I can do circles around the Fords, extremely reliable, very comfortable no leaks, and WAAAAAYYYYY better gas milage. I told myself if Toyota does not come out with a Diesel truck, I would drive my old T100 until I hit 500,000 or Toyota comes out with a diesel. I have to buy another truck for tax purposes this year and will NOT buy the Tundra that gets worse milage then my Fords....TOYOTA- Give the people what they want or we will go elsewhere....So looks like I will buy another Ford this year. Pretty much over waiting for A Toyota diesel truck- After my 4th Toyota 4x4 they will be loosing a lifelong consumer. Pretty sad.

I was looking forward to upgrading from my GMC to a Toyota. Toyota underestimated the wants of the US market.

Dang, I really wanted a new Toyota truck this year. I've been driving my 04 Tacoma since new, now has 150k on it and has never left me stranded. I want to keep it for my kids as they are going to be driving soon. Would have loved the diesel I've been being teased with for the last few years. Oh well I guess it will be my second choice, GMC duramax. I already own a 6.0 ford I would love it if tri-star had done it right, but they left that job up to the after market crowd. Shame on Toyota for screwing over the North American Market, again and shame on the EPA for being idiots. The general public wouldn't put up with grossly polluting vehicles and we don't need some over zealous standard thrown at the industry by a government agency.

I agree no diesel will lose them some customers, I might be one of them..but the question is will they lose significant numbers of customers? Time will tell. After owning a Tacoma for 17 years and being very happy with it, I am now considering the Chevy specifically for the diesel. If there was no diesel, I would buy another Tacoma based entirely on the service and durability my current Tacoma has given me.

The Toyota Hilux works great, I've had it in New Zealand and could not work out why here in the USA we could not. If I was the big three I'd be putting heat on the government to keep it out as when it's available the big three will loose out on sales.
One way around it is to get a crate Motor sent over from Japan and drop it in.

Noj (not verified)    April 29, 2016 - 12:35AM

Whoa guys hold your horses. Do not have false hope that Toyota will ever make diesel trucks in North America , they never will. Don't you know that the big 3's are owned by the government? That's why the big 3's can get away with making diesels almost at no cost to them. The government will make it difficult for Toyota to make diesel trucks because they know once this happened customers may NOT buy the GM's, the Fords, the Rams of the world and the government will lose their business. Why do you think Toyota have diesel trucks from other parts of the world? But not in North America? It does not take rocket science to figure this out.

I've owned a Dodge 2500 24v diesel for over 13 years. Yes- great engine and I could tow a lot and not even know it. However I don't tow that much anymore. I bought a gasser Tacoma as a replacement truck. Simple, reliable and perfect for my needs.

Honestly I'm not sure why everyone is clamoring for a diesel in a small truck. You are still limited in towing, the weight of the diesel impacts payload capacity- there are some downsides to a diesel. I don't think we can assume longevity is greater, at least not from a cost/benefit analysis.

I'm kinda with Toyota on this one. Does it really make sense from a cost/benefit analysis? I don't think so. Maybe in the Tundra platform, and that's a big maybe.

We'll see how Nissan and Chevy sales pan out..

Easy they have to put American engine like Nissan titan in other way the market is closed to toyota, why because the only diesel truck at USA are dogge Chevy or ford.

I waited for Toyota to come up with a diesel engine for many years, finally I give up and bought RAM Ecodiesel. Good buy Toyota,,,, I love my diesel ram.....

Anna (not verified)    September 2, 2016 - 1:57PM

Been a die-hard toyota since i bought my first truck... Sold my 2006 Tacoma and bought a Ram ecodiesel. Can't pass up that engine performance and MPG... 29 highway, 20 in town. Hard to justify driving a minitruck when I can't even pull 20 mpg on the highway... Will trade in the Ram as soon as there is a Taco Diesel offered.

I'm in the Philippines right now where ALL the Toyota Hilux trucks are diesel. They are amazing and seem to have zero smoking and emissions. Get with it Toyota you can sell a diesel in the U.S. My Tacoma which I love gets rotten gas mileage.

Jacob (not verified)    October 15, 2017 - 9:07PM

Come on Toyota just get a dang diesel in your trucks. We got rid of our tundra because y'all never went diesel. We now own a new Cummins ram 2500. Just talked to a friend of mine he is in South America. He said all they have is new tacoma diesels and they beat the crap out of them and they just keep running. All I'm saying is if y'all came out with a tacoma diesel. I would trade my tacoma in in a heart beat.

I think Toyota should give the public what it wants too, Jacob. One "Problem" Toyota has at present is that it sold 18,000 Tacomas last month along with as many Tundras as it could build. Every one of its plants is at 3 shifts and overtime. PS - The gasoline Tacoma TRD Pro (gas) has a higher tow rating than the new Chevy Colorado ZR2 diesel.
