Toyota is recalling about three million RAV4s and RAV4 electric vehicles including over a million in North America. The model years covered range from 2006 through 2014. These are all the prior generation of RAVs since the EVs are the later years covered and only a tiny number of RAV4 EVs were produced and sold in California.
Toyota says that “The involved vehicles are equipped with lap-shoulder seatbelts in both second-row outboard seats. There is a possibility that, in the event of a very severe frontal crash, the lap belt webbing could contact a portion of the metal seat cushion frame, become cut, and separate. If this occurs, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the occupant, which could increase the risk of injury.” There are reports that a crash in Canada that resulted in the death of a passenger may be related to this new recall. Toyota isn’t sure.
This serious recall is underway now. Toyota dealers can install a plastic cover that will prevent the issue in under an hour. To see if your vehicle is affected check your car here.
This serious recall follows another recent RAV4 recall for the windshield wipers which were not compatible with water.
