2015 Subaru Impreza is one of the coolest cars under $18K in America

Kelly Blue Book says the 2015 Subaru Impreza is one of the coolest cars under $18K in America. Did your car make the list?

Kelly Blue Book (KBB) announced their 10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000 of 2015. The 2015 Subaru Impreza made the list and it’s the only car on the list that comes standard with all-wheel-drive. It’s what sets the brand and Impreza apart from other compacts.

KBB says that cool and affordable can coexist in a new car. They’ve detailed the top 10 they say are the coolest in America. The 2015 models starting with the best according to Kelly Blue Book are the Mazda3, Volkswagen Golf, Kia Soul, Jeep Renegade, Honda Civic Coupe, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Chevrolet Sonic, Subaru Impreza and Fiat 500.

The cars were hand-selected by the editors at KBB and chosen with two criteria in mind. All the cars have to be fun-to-drive and fun-to-own. The editors freely admit, it’s a very subjective "cool factor," which is the over-arching number-one criterion for a vehicle to make the list.

Mazda3 has made the list every year

The redesigned Mazda3 is number one again for 2015, and the compact car has been featured on KBB.com's annual affordable "cool cars" list every year of the vehicle's 12-year existence. Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for KBB.com says, "Still riding high on the strength of a well-received redesign for 2014, the 2015 Mazda3, which could be called the reigning king of the Coolest Cars Under $18,000, claims its spot at the top of our annual list for the second year in a row."

What did KBB say about Impreza?

“The only vehicle on this list to include all-wheel drive as standard equipment, and one of our 10 Best All-Wheel-Drive Cars Under $25,000 -- Subaru's compact car gets even cooler as it gets colder.”

The compact Impreza is the least expensive car you can buy with all-wheel drive. While Subaru’s vehicles are renowned for reliability and resale value, some of them also appeal strongly to driving enthusiasts, served by the Impreza lineup in the form of the...read more.

KBB’s list of “budget-smart cool cars” includes a repeat winner, an all-new Jeep and a few cars that have been completely redesigned for 2015. According to KBB, all of them are fun, stylish and versatile, and each one is “enticingly affordable.” The all-weather 2015 Subaru Impreza is the only vehicle on the list that comes standard with all-wheel-drive.

While I agree that the Impreza is cool looking and has great AWD, I would be wary of buying one until Subaru fixes the oil consumption issue. We bought a 2014 Impreza and loved it. However 2000 miles into new car ownership, the low oil engine light came on - the car had burned though 1 qt! SOA had us do an oil consumption test and the car failed. This lead to SOA replacing the engine on our brand new car. 2500 miles after replacing the new engine, we got the low oil light again. SOA this time said it was normal and wouldn't work with us. We have sold the car at a loss and moved on to a more reliable car.
