We recently discovered new information about some Subaru retailers that add extra charges to a new model purchase that you should never have to pay. The report comes from Alex Prestigiacomo, who works at Bachman Subaru. Alex says his Subaru retailer never adds these extra fees to a new model purchase.
This information could save customers thousands of dollars on a new Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, Forester, or another Subaru model purchase. Only a few Subaru retailers are adding these fees, but if you find a dealer, that is, you should locate a new Subaru store to purchase your new all-wheel-drive model.
Market adjustment
High-demand vehicles like the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek or 2023 Subaru Forester can have a 3-4 month wait before the new model arrives. Some dealers may tell you they need to charge between $1,000 to $5,000 over the Manufactures Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).
There should be no market adjustment. The extra charge comes from the individual Subaru retailer; as we mentioned, not all dealers do this. If they do try this sneaky tactic, walk away and find another Subaru retailer.
If you go online and build the new Crosstrek or Forester, you can find the exact price with your desired features and options. The price of the new model configurator is the same price you should pay for that specific vehicle.
Nitrogen filled tires
Some retailers claim that Nitrogen makes the tire pressure less volatile between cold and hot temperatures and will make the tires last longer. Many reports say these claims are overstated. The advantages of tires filled with Nitrogen instead of "regular air" aren't significant enough to justify the price or the inconvenience.
Window tinting
Some retailers will try to be sneaky and charge you for the tinted glass. Most Subaru trim levels come with darker tinted windows in the back from the factory, which are included in the MSRP. The windshield, front driver, and passenger glass have a lighter tint for safety. You do not need to pay extra for the factory window tint.
Theft protection
Subaru puts the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) in different places on the vehicle. The VIN is found stamped under the hood, on the windows, and under the trunk lid. This protects you from someone stealing the car and parting it out. It is also called VIN etching. You do not need to pay extra for the etching.
Pinstriping
Not all new Subaru models come with pin striping on the outside of the vehicle. Some models do have it. Sneaky Subaru retailers may try to add an extra charge for it. The models that have it is covered in the MSRP.
What fees should you expect to pay at a Subaru retailer?
You should expect fees like the title and registration fee, dealer processing fee, and destination and delivery fees, which are not hidden. You will see them on the website if you build your new model online or if you visit the Subaru retailer, they will be on the MSRP in the vehicles window.

What are destination and delivery fees?
Every automaker adds destination charges to a new vehicle's sticker price. The automaker charges them for delivering the car from the factory to the dealership. Unfortunately, destination and delivery fees are non-negotiable. They are added to the final price of every vehicle.
Look out for the five hidden fees when purchasing a new 2023 Outback, 2024 Crosstrek, 2023 Forester, or another Subaru model. If a Subaru retailer tries to charge you for them, walk away.

I bought my Subaru Crosstrek…

I bought my Subaru Crosstrek in 2021, not an easy task at that time. I paid full retail and told the salesman I didn't want any added dealer fees of the usual crap they add on to the bottom line. When the salesman came out with the invoice I saw $399 for small door ding protection. I told him to take it off, I didn't want it. Of course when I went in to sign the 6000 pages of financial stuff I didn't see he didn't take the 399 off and later saw an additional $399 for glass etching. Needless to say I don't take my car there for service, don't recommend the dealership and I'll never buy another car from them or their affiliates.
