I cover the Subaru models with the lowest 5-year depreciation and hold their value the best every year. Subaru usually has more than one model; this year is no exception. I recently covered the top ten models here. Subaru scored three top 10 picks for new model shoppers.
Many buyers are looking for a small SUV, but which one is the best with the lowest 5-year depreciation? Today, the average 5-year depreciation among small SUVs is 38.0 percent. But five models are considerably better.
As I cover the Subaru brand extensively, the Crosstrek is again among the five best small SUVs this year. See where the five top models rank before you buy.
iSeeCars analyzed over 1.1 million vehicles sold from November 2022 to October 2023 to determine 5-year depreciation rates. In comparing this data historically, it found that depreciation was lower across major segments than in 2019.
"The good news for car owners is that all used cars hold their value better than they did five years ago," said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars executive analyst. "But not all used cars retain value equally, with trucks and hybrids among the best segments and electric vehicles the worst. Hybrids have a nearly 12 percentage point advantage over EVs in value retention, translating to thousands of dollars in higher market value after five years."
What are the top 5 small SUVs you can buy that depreciate the least?
1. The Toyota C-HR is ranked best, with an average 5-year depreciation of 24.4%.
2. The Subaru Crosstrek is a close second at 24.5%.
3. Honda HR-V (26.2%)
4. Toyota RAV4 (27.2%)
5. Nissan Kicks (27.5%).
The average depreciation among all small SUVs is 38.0%.
The Subaru Crosstrek is a top pick for small SUV shoppers and is the second-best small SUV. Even more impressive, the Crosstrek is the ninth best overall among all cars, with its average 5-year depreciation of 24.5% and an average $7,214 difference from MSRP.
What makes the Crosstrek an intelligent pick?
The 2024 Crosstrek is set apart from the other four models listed above because the small SUV gets a complete remodel with significant upgrades that I have covered in detail here.
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Trim Levels, Pricing, And New Model Guide Is Here
Crosstrek comes standard with all-wheel-drive for all-weather performance, 8.7 inches of ground clearance (9.3 inches for Crosstrek Wilderness), X-Mode for all-terrain capability, its fuel efficient, and recently earned the highest crash score Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.

Subaru's has two more models that hold their value the best.
The Subaru BRZ is the sixth-best vehicle overall and has an average 5-year depreciation of 23.4% with an average $8,114 difference from MSRP.
The Impreza compact hatchback is another top Subaru model that depreciates the least and makes the list of the top 25 best models.
At number 17, the Subaru Impreza has an average 5-year depreciation of 26.2% with an average $6,927 difference from MSRP.
What is the worst car you can buy that depreciates the most?
Unless you have loads of cash, you should avoid the Maserati Quattroporte. It has an average 5-year depreciation of 64.5% with an average $90,588 difference from MSRP.
For customers who don't have money to burn on depreciation and are looking for a small SUV, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is the second-best model that retains its value better than all but one small SUV. And it's a top 10 best value pick among all cars for new vehicle shoppers.
The Subaru BRZ sports car and Impreza compact hatchback are also smart choices for new vehicle shoppers.
