With summer fast approaching, many outdoor enthusiasts will use their SUVs to go camping. Kelly Blue Book (KBB) came out with the best trucks, cars, and SUVs for camping in 2023. Two Subaru models are standouts, the trail-ready 2023 Subaru Outback and the rugged 2014-2018 Forester.
KBB's seven best new SUVs for camping
The seven best new cars, SUVs, and vans for camping, according to KBB, include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Bronco Sport, Subaru Outback, Toyota 4Runner, Volvo V90 Cross Country, Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition, and Mercedes-Benz Metris Getaway.
What does KBB say about the Outback?
"The 2023 Subaru Outback is the all-arounder wagon-meets-SUV you never knew you needed. With SUV-like ground clearance, standard all-wheel-drive, and a spacious rear cargo area, as well as plenty of room for five adults, the Outback is an excellent camping companion. The Wilderness model gets even more ground clearance, underbody protection, roof rails upgraded to support a roof-top tent, and even an upgraded all-wheel-drive system with special modes."
What is the price of the 2023 Subaru Outback?
The 2023 Outback comes in nine trim levels for U.S. customers; the base trim is priced from $29,620, Premium ($31,920), new Onyx Edition with a 2.5-liter engine ($34,720), Limited ($36,520), Touring ($41,070), Outback Wilderness ($39,670), Onyx Edition XT ($39,820), Limited XT ($40,920), and Touring XT ($43,520). Pricing includes $1,225 destination and delivery fees.
Should you wait for the 2024 Outback?
New car shoppers who can wait can get the upgraded 2024 Subaru Outback. For the 2024 Outback model change, the midsize SUV gets further improvements like upgraded LED dome and cargo lights; a 360-degree heated steering wheel is now standard on more trim levels, including Wilderness and other Onyx Edition trim upgrades. KBB's ten best used SUVs for camping
KBB says the ten best used cars and SUVs for camping include the 2009-2011 Honda Element, 2012-2018 Jeep Wrangler, 2016-2020 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2017-2019 VW Golf Alltrack, 2014-2018 Subaru Forester, 2012-2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, 2016-2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Suburban 2500, 2011-2015 Nissan Xterra, and 2008-2014 Chevrolet Express 1500 AWD.
What sets the Forester apart from the others?
The 2014-2018 Forester includes X-Mode, which improves off-road capability. KBB says, "The Subaru Forester is the roomier, taller cousin of the Outback, and all the reasons that make the Outback a great choice for camping apply here, too. As a bonus, the Forester is typically less expensive than the Outback (while also a bit less luxurious). Yet, it still offers EyeSight advanced driver assists, X-Mode all-wheel-drive with hill descent control, and more."
The price range of the 2014-2018 Subaru Forester is $11,000 to $22,000.
The 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV is among the best new models, and the 2014-2018 Subaru Forester compact SUV is among the best used SUVs for camping this summer, according to Kelley Blue Book.
