Here's a list of the best new compact cars for shoppers looking for the roomiest, most comfortable interiors with good fuel mileage. Consumer Reports (by subscription) updated the list, which includes the 2024 Impreza hatch, which I will give customers complete details on.
The compact cars were tested for fuel economy. How much luggage would fit in the trunk? CR had testers of all shapes, sizes, and ages evaluate how comfortable the front and back seats were and how easy it was to get in and out of the vehicle.
Below, I've listed the most comfortable and spacious compact cars in order of their access, cargo, and comfort tests. CR calculated the best of the best to find out which vehicles excel in these measurements.
- Nissan Kicks
- Nissan Sentra
- Subaru Impreza
- Kia Forte
- Honda Civic
- Kia Soul
- Mazda 3
- Hyundai Elantra
- Toyota Corolla
What does CR say about the 2024 Impreza?
- Price Range: $22,995 - $27,885
- CR MPG: Overall 29 / City 19 / Hwy 42 mpg
- #6 of 16 Compact cars

"The redesigned 2024 Impreza isn't radically different from the previous version, but it received a number of updates. It now comes only as a practical hatchback without a sedan body style. The standard engine is a rather weak 152-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that barely does the job. Fuel economy is a decent 29 mpg overall, which is commendable for a vehicle with full-time all-wheel drive."
"The new RS has a livelier 182-hp, 2.5-liter engine. Both engines are matched to a continuously variable transmission that simulates shifts for a more natural feel."
"The ride is comfortable and composed, handling is capable and secure, and the cabin isn't too loud, barring some rather flagrant engine noise. The interior is a no-frills affair, and the new infotainment system is user-friendly. Blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on some trims."
MY TAKE
I think these five things are essential for compact shoppers to know before buying:
1. The Impreza comes standard with Subaru's excellent Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, giving it all-weather and severe-weather capability. Unlike most small compact cars, the Impreza won't leave you stranded in a snowstorm.
2. The Impreza seats are vastly improved. Subaru significantly upgraded the models with new front seats, along with the Crosstrek. I've sat and driven the models, and they are major upgrades.
The new next-gen 2024 Crosstrek seats will be a game-changing upgrade. See how Subaru hit a home run for its subcompact SUV customers. https://t.co/VYc6rKtGvJ #subaru #crosstrek @SubaruReport pic.twitter.com/GHeElpfBxh

3. There's a new Impreza RS trim level. It comes with the 2.5-liter Boxer engine upgrade for driving enthusiasts looking for performance, speed, and handling in an urban environment.
4. All Impreza hatchback trims offer utility for carrying your gear and sports equipment, and the compact car is an excellent city commuter.
5. The 2024 Subaru Impreza is a good value for compact hatchback buyers in 2024. I recently wrote that it's an excellent time to buy the Impreza. Check out the information here.

For shoppers looking at the Impreza, here is the current pricing.
The 2024 Subaru Impreza Base hatchback starts at $24,085, the Sport hatch starts at $26,085, and the all-new RS hatch with the 2.5-liter Boxer engine starts at $28,975. Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,090).
Should customers wait for the 2025 Impreza?
For the 2025 model year Impreza, there will be few changes in the second year of its life cycle. Subaru typically makes few changes, if any, in the second year. Look for the 2025 Impreza to get a slight price increase.
This is the latest information regarding the 2024 Subaru Impreza. I'll keep you updated with any new information.
