Which small SUV does Consumer Reports (by subscription) recommend for used car shoppers this summer? They say you should check out the 2018-2020 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV if you are buying a used vehicle now.
The Crosstrek is ranked the best used small SUV for its above-average reliability. The Crosstrek also gets good fuel mileage and has the highest safety scores from The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
CR says you should consider buying a certified preowned Crosstrek. "The data clearly shows that owners of CPO cars have fewer problems with them and are more satisfied than owners of traditional used cars," says Steve Elek, automotive data analyst at Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports says, "Essentially an Impreza hatchback with a raised ride height (8.7 inches), the Crosstrek benefits from a smooth ride, simple controls, a roomy rear seat, and good fuel economy. Minor updates were made for 2020.”

The 2020 updates included all models with a CVT get Auto Stop-Start system fuel-saving technology, Subaru SI-Drive driver-selectable powertrain management system with Intelligent and Sport modes, and steering wheel control switches.
An automatic climate control system is standard on Base and Premium trims. Redesigned rear lights are new on all models. The Base trim also gets a new front console USB input port.
Subaru added a Rear Seat Reminder on all 2020 Crosstrek models with a CVT, designed to help prevent child and pet entrapment by alerting the driver to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle.
The automatic power door lock/unlock system is also new for 2020 and automatically locks all the doors, rear gate, and fuel door to help improve vehicle security. The system operates and locks the doors when the shift lever is moved from Park to the Drive position and the vehicle's speed exceeds 13 mph.
A new collision detection power door unlock function (all models) automatically unlocks all the doors and rear gate if the vehicle is subjected to a substantial collision.
What is the 2020 Crosstrek fuel mileage?
The 2020 Crosstrek comes with a 2.0-liter engine and a new 2.5-liter engine. The 2.5-liter is fuel-efficient. The EPA estimated fuel mileage for the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Sport is 27/34 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg.
The 2022 Crosstrek with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine gets an EPA-estimated 28/33 mpg and 30 combined mpg. The 2.5-liter engine receives a one mpg improvement highway over the 2.0-liter engine.

CR says, "The Legacy sedan blends an excellent ride, responsive handling, roomy interior, and simple controls. All-wheel-drive is standard. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder returns 26 mpg overall."
According to Consumer Reports' new rankings, the best used small SUV you can buy is the 2018-2020 Subaru Crosstrek. They say it's your best pick this summer.
