What vehicles are the best for camping? A new report from Kampgrounds of America (KOA) says campers using their midsize vehicles is at an all-time high this summer. Urban campers are fleeing the city to escape the heat and using their family vehicle to get further off the grid.
The Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester have been popular all-wheel-drive vehicles for camping. With the new rugged 2022 Outback Wilderness and 2022 Forester Wilderness trim levels, the Subaru brand is the ideal car brand for getting further away from civilization.
Auto Connected Car says, in the past few years, REI has seen more people turn to their midsized vehicles as a preferred way to get off the grid using their car, visit new places, and try multi-sport adventures in new outdoor destinations. "REI is ready for them," says Melissa Paul, REI senior merchandising manager for camp. "This camper is a bit more spontaneous, is interested in being more self-sustained, and goes out a bit further off the grid to camp."
Subaru of America has partnered with REI to introduce its customers to "vehicle-supported camping." Miranda in the Wild, an REI employee, and YouTube outdoor adventurer, kicked off a nationwide tour, driving coast-to-coast in a Subaru Forester Wilderness while stopping to teach Backpacking 101 classes and is conducting meet-and-greets at select REI locations.
"The Subaru Forester Wilderness, like many midsized vehicles REI Co-op customers already drive, is outfitted with some of the latest and greatest camping gear from brands like Dometic, NEMO, Snow Peak, Thule, and REI Co-op," says REI.
The Outback Wilderness is also one of the best models for off-the-grid camping. Kelley Blue Book says the Outback has been the "ultimate" camping vehicle for decades. They say, "The Outback is a surprisingly large vehicle, so when you fold that rear seat down, there are 75 cubic feet of space for cargo. And every Outback comes with a sturdy roof rack."
The Outback Wilderness trim has a taller ride height with 9.4 inches of ground clearance (Forester Wilderness 9.2-inches), making the midsize SUV "at home on a rough, bumpy off-road trail," says KBB.
What is the price of the Forester and Outback Wilderness?
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness has a starting MSRP of $38,870; The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness starts at $34,695. Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,175).
