How safe are the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV and 2024 Subaru Impreza compact hatchback? According to the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP), they earned the Best 5-Star award. What does it mean for new model shoppers?
The tests are conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and the National Agency for Automotive Safety and Victim's Aid (NASVA).
The next-generation Crosstrek and Impreza achieved the highest score in comprehensive collision and preventive safety performance assessments again. Read my previous report here.
New Crosstrek and Impreza shoppers looking to purchase the two Subaru models can know they'll be safe driving the two new all-wheel-drive compact vehicles.
Subaru says, "In pursuit of the goal of "Delivering Happiness to All," Subaru will continue to enhance safety through its primary, driving, passive, preventive, and connected safety technologies under its "All-Around Safety" principle, which underpins "Enjoyment and Peace of Mind" for all drivers and passengers. Through these efforts, we aim to achieve zero fatal road accidents*1 in 2030."
It's Not The First Safety Award For Crosstrek And Impreza
I reported in October 2023 that both compact vehicles have improved crash protection according to the new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) scores.
The IIHS says the two Subaru models qualify for new awards thanks to improvements in side crash protection and the elimination of subpar headlight options. You can read my report here.
"We are thrilled that seven of our 2024 models received a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick award, especially under the new criteria," said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America. "This is a testament to our commitment to providing customers with vehicles set to the highest safety standards."
New JNCAP Collision Notification Award
The Crosstrek and Impreza received the highest "A rank" in the respective safety performance categories with its Advanced Automatic Collision Notification system available under Subaru Starlink connected services.
The 2025 Subaru Forester now comes with Emergency Stop Assist. It's coming to the Crosstreek and Impreza. Read my new report here.
Subaru reported that among all the five-star-awarded vehicles, the Crosstrek and Impreza earned the highest overall evaluation points (193.53 out of 197 points) and received the JNCAP Best Award in 2023.
New JNCAP Collision Safety Performance
In collision safety performance, the Crosstrek and Impreza have adopted the combination of the Subaru Global Platform and a full inner frame construction, which achieves higher rigidity and crash absorption.
Moreover, the body structure is designed to reduce the damage to the collision partner in the event of a crash. The Crosstrek and Impreza protect the driver and passengers with eight standard airbags, and a pedestrian protection airbag is also standard equipment to reduce the impact on pedestrians.
Subaru Widened The Collision Braking Coverage
Subaru says that in preventive safety performance, a wide-angle mono camera and a stereo camera were adopted, widening the collision braking coverage.
All Crosstrek and Impreza trim levels now come equipped with Subaru's new generation EyeSight, which, in combination with the electric brake booster, improves the responsiveness of the brake assist to support collision avoidance at intersections in various situations.
The new version of Eyesight is standard equipment for the all-new 2024 Crosstrek subcompact SUV and Impreza compact hatchback, bringing the award-winning safety technology to Subaru's most affordable models.
Customers who purchase the 2024 Impreza and 2024 Crosstrek can be sure they receive the top crash prevention safety marks worldwide.
