CR’s 7 Best New Cars Under $30K - Subaru Legacy Is Not The Best But It's A Top Pick

The 2023 Subaru Legacy sedan is now ranked one of the best new midsize cars you can buy for under $30,000 by Consumer Reports. Check out why the Legacy could be better but scores among the top models in its category.

What is the best midsize car under $30,000 you can buy this year? According to Consumer Reports (by subscription) recent tests and surveys, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid is the top pick. CR's models are ranked based on road-test performance, owner satisfaction, predicted reliability, safety, scores and costs less than the average new car today.

Consumer Reports says the Subaru Legacy is a top midsize sedan model pick because the sedan also offers good road-test performance, reliability, and owner satisfaction. The scores are based on CR's most recent tests and owner surveys. The 2023 Legacy scores number five of nine midsize models with a top score of 80, outscoring the top-selling Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

2023 Subaru Legacy

Consumer Reports says, "The Legacy provides a super-comfortable ride that outshines some luxury cars. Handling is responsive but not sporty. This all-wheel-drive sedan is fitted with two four-cylinder engines: a 182-horsepower, 2.5-liter, and a 260-horsepower, turbocharged 2.4-liter."

Is there a downside to the Legacy? CR says, "The standard engine is adequate but makes an unpleasant roar when pushed."

Should customers wait for the 2024 Legacy?

The 2024 Subaru Legacy is coming with new upgrades over the outgoing model this fall. The Base Subaru Legacy dome light has been upgraded to LED. In addition, the 2024 Subaru Legacy Sport trim level now comes standard with the Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system featuring a Harman Kardon speaker system with a 576-watt equivalent amplifier.

For the 2024 model year, the Legacy sedan is still available in five trim levels. The base is priced at $25,985, Premium ($28,285), Sport ($35,585), Limited ($33,035), and Touring XT ($39,285). Destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,090).

2024 Legacy has a quiet cabin

Consumers who buy a midsize sedan are looking for a comfortable, quiet cabin, and you don't have to buy a luxury car. So which automaker makes the quietest new sedans? A recent study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) identifies the six quietest mainstream sedans you can buy today.

The 2024 Subaru Legacy now scores the fourth-highest in its class and joins the Subaru Ascent 3-Row SUV, which is also best at keeping the noise out. Check the report below for more details.
