With high gas prices this summer, which SUVs are the most reliable and fuel-efficient? An updated Consumer Reports study (by subscription) says two Subaru models, the 2022 Forester and 2022 Crosstrek, remain the most reliable and fuel-stingy new SUVs you can buy this summer.
Consumer Reports compiled the compact SUVs that scored well in their road tests have average-or-better predicted reliability ratings and get 28 mpg overall or better. CR says the refreshed 2022 Forester is one of the best in the compact SUV category, and the popular 2022 Crosstrek scores highest in its subcompact SUV class.

The Consumer Reports' seven most reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUVs are the Hyundai Tucson with a score of 93, followed by the Subaru Forester (score of 90), Toyota RAV4 Prime (88), Subaru Crosstrek (83), Lexus NX (83), Honda CR-V (82), Lexus UX (71), Toyota Corolla Cross (68), and Toyota RAV4 (68).

The 2022 Subaru Forester, with standard all-wheel-drive, is the number two small SUV in fuel mileage with 28 combined mpg and 20/38 city/highway mpg.
CR says, "The popular Forester delivers a satisfying combination of a roomy interior, excellent visibility, commendable fuel economy, simple controls, a comfortable ride, and responsive handling. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) returned 28 mpg in our tests, among the best in class."
What is the fuel mileage of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek?
The Subaru Crosstrek uses direct injection on its new 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine and gets 27/34 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg. The 2.0-liter engine gets 28/33 mpg and 30 combined mpg with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic, contributing to better mileage.
CR says, "Both versions (Crosstrek and Crosstrek Hybrid) are appealing small SUVs. They deliver good fuel economy, impressive ride comfort, and competent and enjoyable handling. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission in our tests achieved 29 mpg overall, which is among the best for small SUVs."
What is the price of the 2022 Forester?
The 2022 Forester comes in six trim levels; The Base Forester starts at $27,070, Premium ($30,070), Sport ($31,640), Limited ($33,750), new Wilderness ($34,695), and Touring ($37,170). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,175).
What is the price of the 2022 Crosstrek?
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek comes in five trim levels for customers. The base trim is priced from $24,320, Premium ($25,470), Sport ($28,670), Limited ($30,170) and Crosstrek Hybrid ($37,520). Prices include destination and delivery fees that increase ($1,175).
