Does the 2023 Subaru Solterra battery take up room inside the cabin? A new study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) says you can go electric without compromise when fitting passengers and cargo into the Solterra EV. The new Solterra is among the three roomiest, most comfortable EVs that Consumer Reports recommends.
CR says, "Going electric doesn't mean giving up space for people and stuff." Consumer Reports' list of the most comfortable and spacious electric SUVs is below in order of their roominess and comfort score. The Overall Score for each vehicle factors in road-test performance, owner satisfaction, predicted reliability, and safety.
The three electric SUV standouts that CR says are the best are the BMW iX, with a score of 85, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (76), and the Subaru Solterra (75).
What does CR say about the Solterra EV?
CR says, "The Solterra is Subaru's first-ever electric vehicle, essentially a Toyota bZ4X. It comes with front and rear motors to form an all-wheel-drive system. It has a functional small SUV interior, but its driving range of 222 miles is shorter than the competition. The power is smooth and predictable. Handling is agile and secure, and the ride is mostly comfortable, if slightly jittery. Oddly, there is no glove box or a rear wiper."
"We measured a generous 29 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats folded. With a weak 6.6-kilowatt onboard charger, home charging is on the slow side. DC fast charging in public places, with a maximum acceptance rate of 100 kW, is also on the skimpy side. Displays for range and battery state up front are sparse. Subaru's EyeSight standard active safety features include AEB with pedestrian detection, BSW, RCTW, and adaptive cruise control."
Subaru Solterra safety score
The all-new 2023 Subaru Solterra EV (built after October 2022) earned the Top Safety Pick+ award for Small SUVs from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It's the best and the highest honor in its latest list of the safest cars in 2023.
What is the price of the 2023 Subaru Solterra?
The 2023 Solterra has three trim levels, Premium, Limited, and Touring. Pricing for the Solterra Premium trim level starts at $46,220. The Limited trim carries a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price of $49,720. Finally, the top-of-the-line Touring trim is priced at $53,220. Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,225).
Another study from Consumer Reports says the all-new Solterra is among the top 20 percent of new vehicles with the cleanest emissions on the market. As a result, it is now a Green Choice and recommended by the latest CR rankings. Check out the report here.
Is the 2023 Subaru Solterra roomy and comfortable? Consumer Reports says it's the third-best new electric SUV that is roomy and comfortable that they recommend.
