Consumer Reports says the Subaru Forester is the topped-ranked compact SUV you can buy today, priced from $25,000 to $35,000. That's a high honor for Subaru's Forester.
CR only recommends vehicles that also scored well in road tests, comprising more than 50 objective and subjective evaluations. On top of that, they have good reliability and essential advanced safety equipment. They also performed well in government and insurance industry crash tests.
Subaru Forester gets an overall score of 87 points and is the number one compact SUV among twenty-eight compact SUVs.

The Subaru Forester is followed by the Honda CR-V (83), Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (83), Nissan Rogue (81), Kia Sportage Hybrid (80), Mazda CX-50 (78), Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (78), Toyota Corolla Cross (77), Mazda CX-5 (77), Ford Escape Hybrid (72), Honda HR-V (73), Mitsubishi Outlander (72), Chevrolet Trailblazer (70), and Kia Seltos (70).
What are Subaru Forester's safety scores?
All 2023 Forester trim levels earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It also gets the highest five-star rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS says the 2022 Forester meets all the criteria for the highest award because of its standard front crash prevention system, which has earned superior ratings in recent tests.

EyeSight can detect an object or vehicle in front of the Forester and bring the compact SUV to a complete stop. The video below shows the Forester on a test course going 30 miles per hour. Without a driver to step on the brakes, the Forester stops before hitting the barrier. A vehicle without the driver assist EyeSight technology would slam into the car ahead and could cause serious injury.
What is the price of the 2023 Forester with EyeSight?
The 2023 Forester comes in six trim levels; The Base Forester starts at $27,620, Premium ($30,620), Sport ($32,190), Limited ($34,300), Wilderness ($35,245), and Touring ($37,720). Pricing includes dealer fees ($1,225).
Consumer Reports says 2023 is the number one ranked compact SUV you can buy today. It scores highest in road tests, has good reliability, and has critical advanced safety equipment you don't pay extra for on new models.
