The Hot Subaru Crosstrek Is Not In First - It Just Pulled Up Last

The Subaru Crosstrek saw dizzying heights last year when it was Subaru of America's top-selling model. The small SUV couldn't keep up its hot sales pace, and it had to come down sometime. That time is now as the Crosstrek.

If you read my story last month, I reported that the Crosstrek saw a sales drop for its third consecutive month. The Crosstrek sales almost dropped for the fourth month in October, but it made a slight 0.9 percentage increase.

That small increase still leaves the Crosstrek down 0.5 percent for the year, the only Subaru nameplate in Subaru of America's lineup that is not in positive figures for the first ten months of the year. 

Oh, how far the Crosstrek has fallen. But it's not all bad news. 

As Subaru changed the model to the all-new 2024 Crosstrek, sales of the subcompact SUV are up in October, and Crosstrek is the second best seller in the lineup. Crosstrek sales were up 0.9 percent, with 13,768 models delivered to customers in October compared with 13,635 in October 2022.

Crosstrek is second in the lineup behind Outback year to date, with 128,400 models sold in 2023. Look for the Crosstrek to challenge the number one-selling Outback for the top spot as the all-new 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness arrives at U.S. retailers this fall. 

Where does the Crosstrek go from here?

Here is why the next-generation 2024 Crosstrek is about to explode in sales. The Crosstrek is all-new and gets significant upgrades over the 2023 model, which I have covered extensively. 

The new Crosstrek is positioned perfectly to take advantage of the current small SUV segment climate. The Crosstrek remains affordable for small SUV buyers, and it gets good fuel mileage. 

Here is the new 2024 Crosstrek pricing.

For 2024, the Crosstrek will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels and has a starting price of $26,290 (the same MSRP as the 2023 Base model equipped with the Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission).

The 2024 Crosstrek Premium has a starting price of $27,440, Sport ($30,290), and Limited ($32,190). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225).

What is the price of the Crosstrek Wilderness?

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness will be the most expensive Crosstrek trim level. The all-new Crosstrek Wilderness costs $33,290, including dealer destination and delivery fees ($1,295).

What is the fuel efficiency of the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek?

The remodeled 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport and Limited trims with the 2.5-liter get an EPA-estimated 26/33 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg. The 2024 Wilderness trim gets an EPA-estimated 25/29 city/highway mpg and 27 combined mpg. 

The 2024 Crosstrek Base and Premium trims with the 2.0-liter engine get an EPA-estimated 27/34 mpg and 29 combined mpg with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic.The Crosstrek just received the top safety scores from the IIHS.

I recently covered the new Crosstrek's improved safety scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The headlights are a substantial reason why. Customers no longer have to buy the top-trim Crosstrek Limited to get the best headlights.

What sets the Crosstrek apart from the other small SUVs?

The Subaru Crosstrek comes with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which no competitor exceeds (9.3 inches on Wilderness). Crosstrek also comes with X-Mode on Base and Premium trim levels for all-weather performance and dual function X-Mode on Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trims for improved off-pavement performance.

For active customers looking for superior all-wheel-drive performance, safety tech, utility, and fuel efficiency, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is still the best pick. The subcompact SUV is down but not out. Look for Crosstrek sales to improve significantly in the last two months of 2023.
