Which Subaru all-wheel-drive vehicles are the safest for other drivers? According to recent calculations by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2023 Subaru Ascent and 2023 Subaru Forester are the safest new vehicles you can buy. What does this mean for other drivers on the road?
This year for the first time, the IIHS calculated the best and worst models according to the number of drivers in other vehicles killed in crashes with them.
The lowest rates of other-driver deaths are calculated per million registered vehicle years, 2020 and equivalent earlier models.
Two Subaru vehicles rank among the best.
The Subaru Ascent midsize SUV is the fourth safest vehicle, with 16 other-driver deaths. The Subaru Forester compact SUV also makes the list and is ranked the eighth safest, with 21 other-driver deaths.
IIHS says, "Crash avoidance systems and other advanced safety features are most often standard equipment on luxury vehicles, as well as the three Subaru models (Ascent, Forester, and Outback) that rank among the top performers on both lists. In contrast, crash avoidance is optional on nearly all the worst performers, many of which also fall short of a good rating in at least one IIHS crashworthiness evaluation."
The IIHS also revealed the 2023 Subaru Outback is the ninth vehicle on the list to have the lowest rates of driver deaths, with five. Check out the report here.
Ascent, Forester, and Outback get the highest IIHS safety scores.
The three Subaru models score the highest IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. The IIHS says these vehicles must have the highest 'Good' ratings in the driver- and passenger-side small-overlap front crash test and original moderate-overlap front crash test and a 'Good' rating in the updated side crash test.
In addition to requiring standard-equipped 'Acceptable' or 'Good' ratings for headlights, which use a different scale, they must also have an 'Advanced' or 'Superior' rating for daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention and an 'Advanced' or 'Superior' rating for nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.
The Subaru EyeSight driver assist safety technology is standard on all 2023 Subaru Ascent, 2023 Subaru Forester, and 2023 Subaru Outback trim levels. The IIHS says Ascent and Forester are the safest new models with the lowest other-driver deaths.
