Legacy Sedan Is Now The Only Subaru Model With Fewer Sales Than Last Year

Why are sales dropping if the 2023 Subaru Legacy sedan is one of the best midsize sedans for shoppers? Check out the Subaru Legacy report here.

If you are considering purchasing a 2023 Subaru Legacy, you are one of the few sedan shoppers left in the U.S. market. Sales of the Subaru Legacy midsize sedan follow industry trends as many shoppers buy small and midsize SUVs instead of sedans.

Subaru of America reports they delivered 2,058 new Legacy midsize sedans to customers last month compared with 2,392 in May 2022, a decrease of 14.0 percent. With the decline, the Legacy sedan is now down 6.8 percent in the first five months of 2023. Legacy has 9,613 model sales throughout the first five months of 2023 compared with 10,309 in the same period in 2022.

2023 Subaru Legacy

The Legacy is the seventh best-selling model in Subaru of America's all-wheel-drive lineup. The midsize sedan is now the only Subaru of America model with negative sales in 2023.

Subaru is still committed to the Legacy and gave the 2023 model new upgrades. Legacy is still a good value for shoppers looking for an all-wheel-drive sedan with all-weather capability. Legacy is the only sedan in America with all trim levels that come with standard all-wheel-drive that you don't pay extra for.

Legacy gets new upgrades.

The 2023 Legacy midsize sedan has a redesigned front fascia and the latest EyeSight safety technology. In addition, Subaru also updated Legacy's multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The refreshed 2023 Subaru received a more prominent grille and redesigned LED headlights. However, the big jump in price for the Sport trim is because it now comes standard with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. As a result, Subaru dropped the Limited XT trim level. In addition, a new wide-angle Mono Camera is added to the 2023 Legacy Touring XT trim level.

Four reasons why the Legacy is a good pick for shoppers this summer.

As mentioned above, the 2023 Legacy is still the only midsize sedan with standard all-wheel-drive making it a safe all-weather sedan. Moreover, you don't pay extra for Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. The Legacy also gets the highest safety scores from the IIHS. In addition, the Legacy gets good fuel mileage, and it runs on regular unleaded, not the more expensive premium fuel.

What is the Legacy fuel mileage?

The standard naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine gets an EPA-estimated 27/35 mpg city/highway and 30 combined mpg.

The EPA says the Sport and Touring XT trims with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine return an estimated 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 26 combined mpg.

With gas prices rising, do you need the more expensive grade of gasoline for the 2023 Legacy turbocharged engine? If you buy any new 2023 Subaru Legacy trim level, the sedan is designed to run the best on 87-octane gasoline, and you don't need expensive Premium or mid-grade fuel.

What is the price of the 2023 Legacy?

The 2023 Legacy sedan now comes in five trim levels. The 2023 midsize sedan starts at $25,415 for the base trim, Premium ($27,715), Limited ($32,465), Sport with a new 2.4-liter turbo engine ($34,915), and top-of-the-line Touring XT ($38,715). Destination and delivery fees are included in the pricing above ($1,020).

Subaru is upgrading the 2024 Legacy sedan with new features for customers. Check out the pricing, trim, and new model guide here for complete information. The 2024 Legacy arrives for U.S. customers this fall.

Sales of the newly-upgraded 2023 Subaru Legacy midsize sedan were down in May, and it holds the distinction as the only Subaru nameplate with negative sales in 2023. Even though sales are dropping, it's still the best pick for sedan shoppers this summer.

People just follow like sheep. Everybody else "needs" a big SUV with 3 feet of ground clearance. Must pretend to be rugged and outdoorsy. I like Subarus and own 2. I will never be caught dead driving a crossover or SUV though. The legacy is a great car for the money.

Legacy high on my shopping list..

some of the reasons
1. great size not too large
2. Standard all wheel drive
3. Comfortable and quiet ride compared to competitors and better than suv
4. will have better handling then Suv
5. will have better mpg than suv
6. descent ground clearance for a car at 5.8 inches
7 descent look on the outside, not being common is a good think unlike accord, camry which I think it looks better than both.
8 not being a soccer mom cuv
9 since it is a slow seller a chance to negotiate more.
10 descent mpg
