New 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition; Improved Cornering, Same Power

Toyota announces a new for 2019, Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition. See what sets it apart.

Toyota Motor announced a new 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition model. It’s made for the North American sports car market and comes with extras that set this limited production model apart. Toyota Racing Division (TRD) adds goodies to the suspension, brakes, body kit, along with a special exterior paint and special interior, Sorry performance fans, it still comes with the standard 205 horsepower naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Boxer engine.

The 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition comes with SACHS dampers, 12.8-/12.4-in. front/rear Brembo brakes, and exclusive 18 x 7.5-in. alloy wheels wrapped in 215/40R18 85Y stickier Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. It’s basically the Subaru BRZ tS with a unique color, a body kit, and interior trim but $1,075 less.

The 86 TRD Special Edition gets an exclusive Raven exterior paint job, along with TRD tricolor graphic and TRD body kit (which includes front bumper, side sills, rear bumper/diffuser, and spoiler). A TRD exhaust with brushed stainless steel tips is also standard on the rear-drive sports coupe.

Inside, The 86 TRD Special Edition gets a new red and black-trimmed telescoping steering wheel with red contrast stitching; red and black sport bucket seats with side bolsters; Granlux suede-like covering atop the instrument cluster; “TRD” logo embroidered on passenger side instrument panel; red contrast stitching throughout; and red seatbelts.

We aren’t sure of the significance of the limited production number, but Toyota says only 1,418 units will be produced. The Toyota 86 is jointly produced alongside the BRZ tS ($33,495) at the Subaru Gunma factory. The 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition will have an MSRP of $32,420 and will begin arriving in showrooms August 2018.

That rear end of the 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition is ugly. I would change the bumper area. Don't mind the exhaust pipes sticking out but the rest just looks tacked on.
