Can you wait for this?
Are you ready for a new Subaru battery-electric wagon? A new report from Automotive News (by subscription) says a new Subaru Outback-sized all-electric wagon is coming to U.S. customers by 2028. This new model promises to be more environmentally friendly and cost-effective in the long run, making it a compelling option for Subaru enthusiasts.
I reported the new EV wagon in my report here last week, which is the size of the Outback midsize SUV. Instead of building an electric Outback, Subaru Corporation will produce an all-electric wagon for its U.S. customers.
Automotive News says, "Keeping to the brand's heritage, an Outback-size electric wagon will debut in 2028."
Let's imagine the unique features and capabilities of the new Subaru EV wagon.
Subaru has not revealed any information on the new EV Wagon. The image above is a rendering of what the new EV wagon could look like. If you are waiting for new EVs from Subaru you won't have to wait much longer.
Subaru Corporation recently announced they will build a dedicated all-electric model plant by 2027 and begin manufacturing new EV models as they ramp up battery-electric production in the next five years. Read my complete Subaru EV report here.
A new 3-Row Subaru EV
One Subaru EV will be an all-new 3-Row SUV EV the size of the Ascent. It will be a collaboration with Toyota and built in Kentucky.
Subaru says it will design its unique models and won't rely on Toyota to collaborate on many of its next all-wheel-drive EVs. Subaru will build a dedicated EV factory on the site of its Oizumi plant, which now makes engines and transmissions. I reported on it here.
The new Subaru electric Wagon will also likely be developed in-house on the e-Subaru Global Platform and built-in Gunma, Japan, alongside the new 2-Row electric compact SUV the size of the Forester—another new EV you might want to wait for. These models are expected to feature advanced technology, spacious interiors, and the reliable performance that Subaru is known for.
Back to the EV Wagon.
Subaru has yet to say where the new EV wagon will be built, but it could be built in Lafayette, Indiana. Subaru will make another significant shift and move the Outback production from the U.S. to Japan sometime next year. You can read my report here.
Extensive changes are coming for U.S. customers.
What can U.S. customers expect in the next five years? Subaru will offer three new EVs in North America.
- An Ascent-sized 3-Row EV built in Kentucky in collaboration with Toyota in late 2025.
- A Forester-sized compact SUV EV developed in-house on the e-Subaru platform is set to debut in 2027.
- An Outback-sized electric wagon developed in-house on the e-Subaru platform will debut in 2028.
Subaru will offer North American customers three or four new hybrid models.
- The all-new Forester hybrid is due next spring, 2025.
- The Outback will offer an optional hybrid powertrain coming in 2026.
- The Crosstrek will also likely offer an optional hybrid powertrain coming in 2026.
- A new Ascent hybrid could follow the Forester and Outback and remain for another generation with an optional hybrid powertrain.
The new electric wagon from Subaru is poised to be a success among its North American customers.
The current Outback is a top-selling model for Subaru of America year in and year out. A new electric wagon could be a big hit as it will likely be a model with the same characteristics as the popular Outback.
It will have a car-like ride and the utility and versatility of an SUV—standard Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel-drive and extra ground clearance. I hope Subaru will produce a rugged EV Wilderness trim level for outdoor enthusiasts.
Are you anticipating the arrival of these new EV and Hybrid models?

That's not a wagon that is a truck!
Subaru of America hasn't had proper wagon in almost a generation now. No, the past few generations of Outback don't count as wagons.
Give us the Levorg already instead of crossover(Outback).

I want a range of over 600 miles, a 5min recharge time, and a charging network that is more similar to current (hahaha) gas station availability, than it is to our current charging network. I also want free updates, like Tesla, or my android phone. I want an auto drive system, that is at least as good as the current Tesla autopilot. Note: The most I have ever spent on an auto was about $25k. My last 5 autos were: $17k, $8k, $16k, $1k, $17k. Our family income is over $300k.

I love my '24 Outback and may consider a Hybrid version, however, I would never purchase an all-electric vehicle Subaru or not. Period.
