The Next-Gen WRX Leads All Subaru Models In One Surprising Category

The Subaru WRX was just outsold by the all-new Impreza hatch and Legacy sedan in August, but the sports car leads all models in one category. Check out the new report and what's next for the sport-tuned WRX.

The next-generation 2023 Subaru WRX has been on an upward trend for most of 2023, but not anymore, after Subaru of America reported August sales. The hot WRX was just passed by the all-new 2024 Impreza hatch and the Legacy sedan, but the sport-tuned WRX leads all models in one surprising category.

WRX drops in sales but still leads all of Subaru of America's models.

The 2023 Subaru WRX sales dropped 27.2 percent in August, with 1,677 performance models delivered to customers compared with 2,304 sales in August 2022. But the WRX leads all Subaru of America's models in percentage of increase for the year. The WRX is up 71.5 percent in the first eight months, with 18,944 sport-tuned models sold this year.

In comparison, year to date, WRX posted a 71.5 percent increase, Impreza sales increased by 21.4 percent, and the BRZ sport coupe posted a rise of 40.5 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

What happened in August?

The WRX has retained its popularity, but the WRX inventory is lower after solid sales months in May and June. In May, the WRX was up an impressive 78.2 percent and the second best-performing carline for Subaru of America. The 2023 Subaru WRX was up 58.8 percent in June.

Subaru Corporation can't keep up with the demand, and you won't find any WRX sports cars sitting on Subaru of America's lots. Subaru Corporation could not keep up with the demand for the WRX and ran out of inventory for U.S. customers. 

What is the price of the 2023 WRX?

The 2023 WRX 6-speed manual trim level starts at $31,625. The WRX with Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) is $33,475, the WRX Premium 6-speed manual is $34,125, the WRX Premium SPT is $36,175, the WRX Limited 6-speed manual is $38,515, the WRX Limited SPT is $40,765, and WRX GT is $44,415. Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,020).

What's next for the WRX?

The 2024 Subaru WRX performance sedan WRX will be in the third year of its production life cycle, and there will be few changes. The WRX should get a mid-cycle refresh in 2026 if the sports car's life cycle stays according to form.

A recent story from Automotive News says the Subaru WRX STI will make a return and is expected to be converted to an all-electric model in 2027. Stay tuned for a full report.

If Subaru were to build more vehicles, they would sell more vehicles. Maintaining tight inventories is counterproductive and suppresses sales. “Build it and they will come.”
