The Subaru Outback has been the sales leader for Subaru of America until last year when it lost the title. After that, the hot Crosstrek subcompact SUV became the best-selling model in the lineup, but the Outback midsize SUV is back.
Subaru of America (SOA) is also back and riding high as the automaker did it again in June with another sales increase, and the Outback played a significant part. SOA reported a sales increase last month, continuing the upward trend in 2023.
Subaru says sales were up 27.8 percent in June, the eleventh consecutive month of month-over-month sales increases for the Camden, N.J. automaker. SOA also reported year-to-date sales of 304,092 models delivered to customers, a 15 percent increase compared to 2022.
All models are up in June.
The upward sales trend results from the entire model lineup being up for the month. The BRZ sport coupe had the most significant jump in sales, followed by the WRX sports car, Impreza compact, and Forester compact SUV. But the Outback led the lineup to keep the sales leader title in June.
SOA reported 55,168 new Subaru vehicles were delivered to customers last month compared with June 2022, when they had 43,175 sales. "The first half of 2023 has been a resounding success thanks to the exceptional efforts of our Subaru retailers. This June, their efforts led to our 11th consecutive month of sales growth, an increase of 28 percent compared to June 2022," said Jeff Walters, new President, and Chief Operating Officer of Subaru of America.
Outback is back on top as the top performer in June and for the first six months of the year.
The newly upgraded 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV is on top again, increasing 23.5 percent in June, with 16,225 models sold compared with 13,135 in June 2022. The Outback is still the top performer in the lineup. Outback is now up 5.3 percent in the first half of 2023. Outback leads all other models with 81,403 midsize SUVs delivered to customers in the first six months.

According to a new report from iSeeCars, the 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV scores the best small and crossover SUV under $30,000 with an iSeeCars score of 8.8/10, a reliability score of 8.4/10, a value retention score of 8.0/10, and 10/10 for safety. iSeeCars says the Outback is the #2 of 28 best new SUVs for the money you can buy this summer.
What is the price of the 2023 Subaru Outback?
The 2023 Outback comes in nine trim levels for U.S. customers; the Base trim is priced from $29,620, Premium ($31,920), new Onyx Edition with a 2.5-liter engine ($34,720), Limited ($36,520), Touring ($41,070), Outback Wilderness ($39,670), Onyx Edition XT ($39,820), Limited XT ($40,920), and Touring XT ($43,520). Pricing includes $1,225 destination and delivery fees.
Should you wait for the 2024 Outback?
The Outback gets new upgrades for the 2024 model change. For 2024, the midsize SUV gets further improvements like upgraded LED dome and cargo lights; a 360-degree heated steering wheel is now standard on more trim levels, including Wilderness and other Onyx Edition trim upgrades. The Base is priced at $30,190, Premium ($32,490), Onyx Edition ($37,400), Limited ($37,090), Touring ($41,640), Onyx Edition XT ($40,655), Wilderness ($41,255), Limited XT ($41,490), and Touring XT ($44,090). In addition, destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,295).
What sets the Outback apart from other family SUVs?
All Outback midsize SUV trim levels ride higher with extra ground clearance than most family haulers. The Outback has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive is standard on all trims, and X-Mode for all-terrain performance comes on all models. The Outback also gets the highest safety scores from the IIHS.
