The RAV4 Can’t Keep Up With Toyota’s High-Rolling 250K+ Mile Models

Toyota, a brand known for its longevity, has a surprise in its lineup. One of its top-selling models, the RAV4, which you might not expect, does not make the top 30 longest-lasting vehicles list. Check out these surprise findings here.

Which Toyota models last the longest?

I recently reported on the most reliable car brands, and it's not a surprise that Toyota makes the most dependable vehicles. Check out my complete report here. How do Toyota's models rank in longevity? Which vehicles are the most likely to go 250,000 miles and beyond?

A recent report from iSeeCars revealed that the Toyota models are the longest-lasting. First, I'll cover the ten longest-lasting Toyota models; then, I'll reveal a top-selling Toyota model that failed to make the list.

iSeeCars says, "The latest iSeeCars.com study has identified the 30 longest-lasting models – all with a much higher chance of reaching the quarter-million milestone. The highest-ranked vehicles, Toyota's Tundra and Sequoia, are four times more likely to reach a quarter-million miles, while the Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, Highlander Hybrid, and Honda Ridgeline are three times more likely to reach 250,000 miles compared to the average vehicle."

Here are the top 10 vehicles and their percent chance of lasting 250,000 miles and beyond.

  1. Toyota Tundra - 36.6%
  2. Toyota Sequoia - 36.4%
  3. Toyota 4Runner - 26.8%
  4. Toyota Tacoma - 26.7%
  5. Toyota Highlander Hybrid - 25.9%
  6. Honda Ridgeline - 25.8%
  7. Chevrolet Suburban - 22.0%
  8. Toyota Avalon - 22.0%
  9. Lexus GX -20.7%
  10. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 -18.8%

Impressive.

As you can see, Toyota has a strongest presence in the top 10 models, with 6 of them being Toyota models and one being a Lexus model. Toyota or Lexus models make up 70% of the top ten longest-lasting vehicles. That's impressive.

Additionally, Toyota has three more models in the top 30 longest-lasting rankings, bringing the total to ten Toyota or Lexus models in the top 30, one-third of all the vehicles. That's also impressive.

Where is the Toyota RAV4?

Surprisingly, Toyota's most popular SUV, the RAV4 compact SUV, does not make the top 30 longest-lasting vehicles list, a fact that surprised me.

Toyota's RAV4 is the top-selling non-pickup model in the U.S., with sales growing 33 percent in the first quarter of 2024. The RAV4 is in the most competitive compact SUV segment and is a perennial favorite. However, the RAV4 is far down the list in longevity.

Where does the Toyota RAV4 rank in longevity?

iSeeCars says the Toyota RAV4 has a 9.6% chance of lasting 250,000 miles and beyond. The compact SUV is far below all other Toyota nameplates, averaging 17%.

Where does Toyota rank among all automakers for longevity? Here are the top seven automakers and their percentage to last 250,00+ miles compared to the average car. The overall average of all cars is 8.6%.

  1. Toyota 17% (2.0x)
  2. Honda 13.6% (1.6x)
  3. Ram 11.5% (1.3x)
  4. GMC 11.4% (1.3x)
  5. Chevrolet 10.5% (1.2x)
  6. Lexus 9.7% (1.1x)
  7. Ford 9.5% (1.1x)

It's even more impressive that Toyota ranks number one when you consider the diverse lineup of vehicles Toyota makes.

iSeeCars says, "Top-ranked Toyota and Honda earn their spots with a full line of cars, trucks, and SUVs, while brands like Ram and GMC focus on trucks and utility vehicles."

I also covered which Toyota models are the most reliable. Here is the data. Check out my report here

In iSeeCars, the most reliable car brands, it's not surprising that Toyota makes the most dependable vehicles. Check out my complete report here. However, not all Toyota models in its lineup get the highest reliability marks. The Toyota RAV4 is the eighth-best Toyota model for reliability, and the RAV4 Hybrid is near the bottom of the list.

Here are Toyota's reliability ratings for the 2024 model year and their reliability score.

  • Toyota Camry - 8.9 / 10
  • Toyota Highlander - 8.9 / 10
  • Toyota Venza (hybrid) - 8.9 / 10
  • Toyota Prius (hatchback) - 8.9 / 10
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid - 8.9 / 10
  • Toyota Prius c - 8.7 / 10
  • Toyota Sienna - 8.7 / 10
  • Toyota RAV4 - 8.5 / 10
  • Toyota Corolla - 8.5 / 10
  • Toyota Yaris - 8.5 / 10

Here are the two least reliable Toyota models according to the iSeeCars analysis.

  • Toyota RAV4 Hybrid - 6.2 / 10
  • Toyota Prius Prime - 5.7 / 10

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid again is a surprise to be the next to lowest in reliability performance.

Here are key facts about the Toyota RAV4.

  • Average Lifespan (years): 12.9
  • Average Lifespan (miles): 165,654 miles
  • Typical Miles Driven per Year: 11,146 miles
  • Probability of Reaching 250K Miles: 9.6%

Here are key facts about the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

  • Average Lifespan (years): 12.3
  • Average Lifespan (miles): 149,131 miles
  • Typical Miles Driven per Year: 10,349 miles
  • Probability of Reaching 200K Miles: 18.4%

How do Toyota RAV4 sales compare with the competition in sales performance?

The Toyota RAV4 is the top-selling small SUV in America, a position it has firmly held and won't be giving up. Here are the top 10 selling compact SUVs, with the RAV4 leading the pack in 2024 year-to-date sales volume.

  1. Toyota RAV4 350,331
  2. Honda CR-V 298,164
  3. Nissan Rogue 189,156
  4. Chevrolet Trax 149,761
  5. Hyundai Tucson 145,947
  6. Chevrolet Equinox 143,524
  7. Subaru Crosstrek 131,847
  8. Subaru Forester 130,098
  9. Ford Escape 120,948
  10. Kia Sportage 118,758

The RAV4 is not slowing down. The compact SUV has increased 15.69 percent over 2023 model year sales.

Despite its lower top mileage and reliability rankings compared with other Toyota models, the RAV4 is a top choice among small SUV shoppers. It's not slowing down and will hold the compact SUV sales title again in 2024.

We have 2 Rav4's. 2011 Limited v6, 218,000 miles. 2013 XLE 255,000 miles. The only major repair was the transmission on the 2013.

I own a 2003 Rav4. 85,000 miles. The best car I've ever had. LOVE my Rav! I can't give her up. Prior cars have been Gran Prix, Cutlass, Corvette, Regal, LeMans. Have also driven my husband's cars. Honda CRV, Honda Civic. None compare to my Rav! I love the reliability. The way it handles. Mostly the Style. Sporty & Small.

Hey
We purchased a 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE in 2019, with 15 miles on the clock. As of today, Oct 15, 2024 we have 114,000 miles on the clock. Replaced tires 3x, rear hubs 1x , spark plugs 1x and oil changes every 10,000 miles.

Kind of wonder what part of the cars fail? Is it the engine, transmission, computers, hybrid battery, tires or what? This article is kind of meaningless. Can you maybe replace the air filter and get another 100K miles? Are junkyards filled with worn out Rav4's? I don't really have a comment, because this article creates a lot of questions. I have been driving Toyotas non-stop since 1998. I have never bought an engine or transmission for any of them. I haven't junked any of them. I junked my last two Fords I bought; a Taurus Wagon and a Windstar.

Our 2013 RAV4 Limited has 150k miles and appears to be going strong. We purchased it used with ~35,000 miles and in excellent condition . Since then, Mostly just expected maintenance, except for a fairly expensive AC repair last year.

We like it love our Rav, will keep it and would recommend it as a good reliable family vehicle.

2019 Rav. Non hybrid. 60,000 miles. No major issues. Did have to replace door hinges on tailgate door. They bend too easily.

I owned a 2022 RAV4 Hybrid. I had zero problems with the car when I traded in for new 2024 Limited RAV4 hybrid. The 2022 had 80,000 miles on it. I am a contact project manager that drives 2,500 miles per month. I traded to have about 80,000 miles on the 2024 RAV4 when my contract ends. Meaning I will still have 75,000 miles on vehicle before 150,000 power train warranty runs out. At 74 years old, hope that this will be may my last car that I will have to buy. I am expecting better than 250,000 miles on the 2024 RAV4.

I currently own a 2002 Toyota RAV4 (purchased in 2005). It has 219,000 miles & is still running great. In the early years I averaged 11,000 miles per year, but the last 5 years only about 5,000 miles per year. Maybe the older versions of the RAV4 have higher mileage stats than the newer models.

Jeanette M Weiser (not verified)    October 15, 2024 - 9:08PM

Just to continue the discussion, I own a 2019 RAV4 Adventure Sport. I average 4,000 miles per month currently, and that includes both highway and off roading at elevation. Living the life it was intended. Currently at 190k with routine maintenance and no major mechanical issues at this point. I bought the vehicle originally due to their historical longevity at high mileage for the Toyota brand. Was surprised to see an article suggesting they may wear out by 150k, so perhaps I have an outline in this model. . . .dealer calls periodically and offers to buy it from me for an interested customer, but currently I have no reason to trade. I have the heated and cooled seats with the vegan leather, plus the sun roof, and the auto raise hatch. These are features I really enjoy that have been removed on the newer models.

We own a 2018 RAV4 Hybrid. It was purchased 10/17. Have approx 60,000mls.
It has been a wonderful car. No issues or complaints. It is a bit smaller than I’d like. I prefer the Highlander. We own a 2000 Highlander…. One of the first ones. Love my Highlander. 24 years old 160,000 mls.
We have had no major repairs, just routine items. FYI we are diehard Toyota drivers

I drive a 2015 RAV4 that currently has 263000 mile on it. I bought it new and have regular maintenance done. I also own a 2006 sienna with little over 191000 miles. The van I bought used 4 years ago and so far needed only regular maintenance as well. My little RAV should hold out until next July, then I'll be ready for a new one. Probably a Highlander then.

I own a 2013 limited AWD with 90000 no issues as of yet no major repairs, just regular maintenance, I love my little car

I OWN 2010 RAV4 JAPANESE MADE I'M THE SECOND OWNER, I'M CURRENTLY OVER 266,OOO I'VE NO MAJOR REPAIRS JUST COMPLETE BRAKES, SERPENTINE BELT, TIRES,ALTERNATOR, REGULAR OIL CHANGES I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS THIS MY 4TH YEAR FEW MORE MONTHS IT'LL BE 5 YEARS SINCE I HAD IT. IT'S BETTER THEN SOME NEW CARS I RENTED A NEW CAR 😡 SOME MONTHS BACK AND I KEPT SAYING TO MYSELF MY CAR DRIVES BETTER THEN THIS. I SEE SO MANY OF THE OLDER MODEL RAV4 ON THE ROAD
SO ALL I CAN SAY IS 2010 QUEENHATTIE IS STILL RIDING.

TazCat (not verified)    October 17, 2024 - 7:10AM

I've had a 2006 Rav4 Sport 4cyl from brand new that is currently just over 228k and still going. Absolutely perfect reliability until about 225k (nothing but expected maintenance items up to that point). Even now she runs fine and hasn't ever left me thumbing a ride, but she does have an intermittent warning light issue that has been proving difficult to catch in the act and get diagnosed. Burns some oil, but she's over 18 years old so I can't real fault her much for that. All in all, my Rav is the best car I've ever owned and if I could wave a wand and make her magically return to factory new condition, I'd drive her for another 18 years.

Amber Hayes (not verified)    October 17, 2024 - 2:15PM

Well crap. I don't drive a RAV4. But that was going to be my next purchase, a hybrid. I have a 2009 Toyota Yaris. So this is super disappointing. What is making the longevity of the vehicle so low?!? I also don't need a huge vehicle like a 4Runner. So now I don't know what to do!!!

Diane (not verified)    October 19, 2024 - 3:15PM

I have a 2015 toyota Rav 4
It has 176,000 miles..it runs great. Lots of pep..smooth
I have never had any problems with it...love it!

Alisa Conley (not verified)    October 20, 2024 - 6:52PM

I have a 2013 Toyota Rav 4 purchased new in 2014...I have over 241,000 miles on it driving for my job and personal travel. This car has been great with only one major item that went wrong but covered under warranty... The torque converter.... Now the paint is starting to peel a bit on the roof and a little surface rust on the tailgate.. But I had the car undercoated at the dealership before I drove it off the lot .. The best decision I could have made living in upstate NY where roads are heavily salted in the winter.... This car is very reliable and I will buy another one hands down when my car is no longer reliable
Thanks!

I have a 2019 Rav4 XLE with 103000 miles. I bought it when it was a year old with 16000 miles, a lease return. It drives as good as the day I bought it. I have maintained it with every service done on schedule by the Toyota dealership in town.I normally get about 35mpg and have gotten 42 on a trip. Great car, my second Rav4, and my 4th Toyota. They last whether you service them or not!

Ken (not verified)    October 22, 2024 - 10:15PM

Doesn't it stand to reason that the top-selling small SUV in America would likely have a lower *percentage* of very high mileage examples given that it's so popular that many new and inexperienced drivers drive them and crash them?

What do the figures like when you look at the actual *number* of Rav4s with 250k+ miles vs. Sequoia, Tundra, etc.?

My career was in Market Research data and sometimes the percentages alone can be misleading.

We bought a new Rav4 in Feb. Of 2016 and we love it. It has 164,000 miles and still runs like a dream. We have kept up the recommended service and it has only had one unscheduled repair. The door latch on the passenger door started getting buggy so I replaced it myself with a Ebay replacement, total cost 27 bucks. Recently my wife scraped the rear quarter panel with her Highlander and it made me sad. It's not the most exciting vehicle on the road but it dang sure is one of the most reliable.

I have a 2010 Toyota Rav 4 with 207,000 miles. No problems. Just recently changed brake pads. Kept up with oil changes etc. Runs good.

We had been trying to buy a Rav4 Prime for 2 years and finally kind of accidentally ended up buying one in March this year. We ran into a regional rep at an auto show and he helped us out a lot, whereas our local dealer wouldn't do anything to accommodate us for 2 years.

The Rav4 has been great. It replaced our 30yo Blazer, which we loved, but was getting old and having numerous small issues, and of course didn't get very good gas mileage compared to the Rav4. It had the best mileage for a mid SUV when we bought it in 1994.

We love the PHEV mode and use it all the time. Didn't have to install a 240V plug either, we use 120V. About 50% of our driving is electric only. That will probably increase in the future as we have made many road trips this year. I have also camped in the back, which worked almost as well as the Blazer.

So far it is an excellent vehicle. We will be looking forward to see how it performs in snow and ice.

I bought my FIRST brand new RAV4 in 2010 with 3 miles on it. FOURTEEN years later in 2024 I traded my 2010 with 92k miles in for a brand new 2024 RAV4 with 15 miles on it. The majority of my mileage is road trips versus in town driving. It was a difficult & emotional decision, but I'm 68 now & figured it'll be the last new car purchase in my lifetime. The 2024 is just as wonderful as my 2010; just more technical & electronic things that I continue to learn. The Toyota RAV4 both 2010 & 2024 are BY FAR the BEST vehicles I've ever had the pleasure of owning. I hope I'm still making Road Trips at 90 years so I can put some miles on the 2024!!
