Subaru held its annual Subiefest in Costa Mesa, California and attendees got a surprise. The got a sneak-peek the next-generation 2022 Subaru BRZ sports coupe. It was part of Subaru of America's world record attempt and charity drive. We have not heard the official announcement yet, but Subaru was trying to break the world record for Subaru vehicles' longest parade.
Can I buy a 2021 Subaru BRZ?
Subaru Corporation stopped producing the current-generation BRZ and Toyota 86 sport coupes, and orders ended on July 20, 2020. There will not be a 2021 Subaru BRZ, so if you want a first-generation model, a few 2020 models are at Subaru retailers around the U.S. and Canada.
Subaru decided to skip a model year before the second-generation arrives. Subaru will not offer a limited edition 2021 BRZ with production ending this summer.
When will Subaru launch the next-generation Subaru BRZ?
The announcement on Subaru of America's social media pages yesterday says the next-generation 2022 Subaru BRZ global reveal is coming this fall. The image doesn't tell us anything other than Subaru is being tight-lipped about the new model sports car.
The teaser image doesn't reveal much, but here is what we know so far. Subaru has not confirmed any of the following information, but sources in Japan say 2022 models won't arrive at retailers in North America until April or May of 2021.
Insider information from the Japanese website BestCarWeb says the 2022 Subaru BRZ -Toyota GR86 will ride on the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) and not the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). Subaru can adapt rear-drive to the new SGP.
Will the 2022 Subaru BRZ be turbocharged?
For those who were hoping for a turbocharged next-generation BRZ/GR86, it's not going to happen if the Japanese website report is correct. BestCarWeb says the Ascent-sourced FA24 2.4-liter Boxer engine will power the new models, but the BRZ/GR86 will be naturally-aspirated.
Both sports cars will have around 220 PS and 240 Nm, (217 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque), a bump up from the current 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. The models will have a 6-speed manual gearbox, and possibly a new eight-speed transmission could be replacing the existing 6-speed automatic gearbox.
2022 Subaru BRZ models equipped with the automatic transmission will come with the next-generation EyeSight X driver-assist technology. The wheelbase and body will be the same size and will utilize the front/struts and rear/double-wishbone suspension, the same as the current-generation two-door coupes.
Subaru of America will reveal the all-new next-generation 2022 Subaru BRZ sometime this fall. Stay tuned.
