Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the motorsport and performance division of Subaru revealed a special 2018 WRX STI S208. This will be the next STI special “S” edition after the S207 was unveiled in 2016. STI is celebrating its 30th anniversary in April, 2018 and this will be Subaru's commemorative model. This will be a Japan-only WRX STI and won’t be sold anywhere else around the globe.
STI will officially unveil the S208 at the Tokyo Motor Show this fall and it will be ultra-exclusive. A report from BestCarWeb says, only 300 examples of the S208 will be released in Japan. This is 100 less than the 400 units of the S207 in 2016 that sold out in one day. STI who regularly release tuned versions of the Subaru WRX STI, says it will be the culmination of technology and the ultimate car to commemorate their 30th anniversary.
STI is developing the S208 as a “super version” of the Subaru 22B STi which was sold in commemoration of Subaru’s WRC title in 1998, with only 400 units produced. The 22B STi is an iconic and highly sought-after model. One pristine example sold at auction last year for $95,000.
The Subaru WRX STI S208 will be powered by a hand-built EJ20 2.0-liter turbo engine that is getting a small bump in power over the S207. Reports say it will get a maximum power output of 330PS (325hp) which is 2hp more than S207. STI will likely upgrade the S208 with special suspension tuning as well as distinctive interior and exterior design upgrades.
Subaru Tecnica International will officially unveil the 2018 Subaru WRX STI S208 at the Tokyo Motor Show this fall. Stay tuned. Performance fans in the U.S. can only look and not touch this exclusive 30th anniversary STI S208.
