Subaru Announces New Forester XT - The Turbo Model You Want But Can’t Have

Subaru Corporation has announced a new turbocharged 2023 Subaru Forester XT. It's a Forester XT turbo model U.S. customers want but it won't be coming to North America.

Subaru customers in Japan get an early Christmas present, but not in North America. Subaru Corporation announced the 2023 Forester in Japan would get a new XT Edition with a turbocharged engine. The new Forester XT comes with a 1.8-liter turbocharged Boxer engine, but it's not coming to North America. It's another Japan-specification model that will not be offered to U.S. customers.

The 2023 Forester XT-Edition is sold in Japan to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the birth of Subaru's all-wheel-drive vehicles. The Forester XT features a 1.8-liter turbocharged direct-injection (DIT) four-cylinder, lean combustion Boxer engine. It produces 175 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.

Why did Subaru drop the U.S.-spec Forester XT?

Subaru enthusiasts in the U.S. have asked for a Forester turbocharged model since the Japanese automaker dropped the Forester 2.0XT in 2019. Subaru says it was because of slow sales, but it was also because Subaru wanted to improve fuel mileage across the lineup.

Will Subaru offer a Forester with a turbocharged engine in the U.S.?

This is a question Forester fans have asked for nearly five years. Subaru Australia will likely get the new Forester XT with a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine sometime next year.

Would customers in the U.S. buy the Forester XT with the smaller FA18 turbo? It's possible because the 2023 Subaru Forester 2.5-liter naturally aspirated Boxer engine produces 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. The 1.8-liter turbocharged Boxer produces less horsepower but considerably more torque (176 lb-ft vs. 221 lb-ft of torque).

Another option for North America would be for Subaru of America to ask Subaru Corporation for the Forester XT with the FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine upgrade. It would be a logical option for the next-generation 2024 Forester Wilderness trim level.

In an interview at the Chicago Auto Show in 2018, Subaru of America President and CEO Tom Doll said the Japanese automaker would not offer a Forester turbo anytime soon in the U.S. market. Doll said it was because the demand for the newly-redesigned Forester SUV was too high right out of the gate for them to offer a turbo version.

Now is the time because sales of the Forester have dropped in the U.S., and the compact SUV is now third in sales behind the Crosstrek subcompact SUV and the Outback midsize SUV.

The next-generation 2024 Subaru Forester Sport and the 2024 Forester Wilderness would be two trim levels that would be a perfect fit for the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. For now, Japan, Australia, and likely Europe will be the only markets to get the newly-announced Forester XT-Edition.

Would you buy a 2024 Subaru Forester if a turbocharged engine were available? Would you want the 1.8-liter or 2.4-liter turbo option? Let Subaru of America know in the comment section below.

the wilderness edition has a lot of what i put on my last of the manuals Forester but its just not keeping up with the times. a sporty manual turbo wilderness would be really fun but the Outlander PHEV is the direction im moving. 248 hp, 60km electric for my daily commute and all new cars have an obnoxious screen so there is no escape for me aside from keeping this box of mods for now XD.

Please bring back the Forester XT I am looking for a new car and a Forester XT 2.4 would be my first option, and a Forester XT 1.8 my second. Thanks

I love my 2016 XT. The dealership in Little Rock has been terrific too. I have been waiting for another turbo to come out and I am running out of time. I do not like the pickup in the non-turbo models. I want to stay Subaru if they will hurry up with this Forester turbo. What do I want.- a turbo and quiet. After that, you already have what I want.

I'd but forester-XT turbo... otherwise current offerings are too weak and underpowered vs the weight. not interested.
Crosstrek also needs a more power option...
STI is gone...
even WRX has a cvt and numb steering.
Subaru is not Subaru anymore...
selling my custom RS of 23 years... jumping ship

I would love to see Forester get 2.4 Turbo in all forester models except maybe base model or top trims Sport, Wilderness, Limited and touring. I think sales would go up and a refresh of model soon again to compete with other small suvs. Maybe a hybrid soon too and more color options.

My 2017 Forester XT is fabulous. Every year I look forward to a new version of Forester. XT and Im disappointed. Love the car. Would truly like to have a new Forester XT before I get to old to drive. Keep up the good work.

Love my 2016 Forester XT Turbo. I will get a new one at the 10-year mark and if no Turbo in Forester it will not be a Subaru at all.

I would love a new forester 2.4 turbo option to replace my 2016 forester XT. Love my car but my brother owns a forester 2.4 and seems underpowered and sluggish. Plan on giving my daughter the XT so an upgrade is coming hopefully it’s a another Subaru turbo 2.4

We have one, maybe two yrs left in our '17 XT. Patiently waiting for another. If if doesn't happen, the replacement will not be a Subaru. Please make it a reality!!

I owned the 2016 Forester Ltd XT in Canada. It has great power but terrible fuel consumption. Due to that reason and the warming of the global climate, I'd prefer the 1.8L turbo as it stll has massive torque and likely good fuel economy.

Currently own a 2014 FXT touring 205k miles. Previous 06 legacy 190k saved my life. Love subies.

Was so disappointed Subie discontinued the FXT.. get rid of it for foresters and then give it to everything else? Unforgivable.

Please bring it back 🙏

That said, my 2014 fxt has had some serious troubles for the type of miles I've put on it and how strict I've followed maintenance. I'd also mention that the cabin is very loud road noise wise. I've had a bunch passengers comment on that. Doesn't really bother me but its come up a ton. I'd imagine thats been sorted since but noteworthy.

I'd buy a 2024 FXT Touring all day (Iwould 100% opt for the 2.4 if I had any say in the matter). I think Subaru should make alot of folks happy and bring it back!

Someone commented about a hybrid option. I think that would also be a great idea. But first, the 2.4 forester xt!

Shawn McDonald (not verified)    September 10, 2023 - 5:58PM

Yes. I have a 2014 Forster cy turbo. I am wanting to purchase a new Forester Wilderness , only if it comes in TURBO. Please Subaru. Release a turbo wilderness forester. I will purchase immediately

Shawn McDonald (not verified)    September 10, 2023 - 11:25PM

Absolutely love my 2014 xt forester. Wanted to UP/ grade to. 24 but will not be an upgrade without turbo. Was hopeful 2024 forester, wilderness would be turbo.

I would be first in line to buy a Forester 2.4 XT in the top trim level. I currently own a 2016 Forester XT with 84k miles on it. Hoping it will hold out until a comparable model is offered.

DS (not verified)    December 24, 2023 - 6:46PM

Please make a Forester 2.4 XT. We test drove your Outback 2.4 XT and it drove like a rocket. We do not like the looks of the Outback particularly (maybe when we are 60 years old we will get a wagon) but we love the rugged looks of the utilitarian Forester. We would buy a new Forester 2.4 XT as soon as it came out. Currently we own the 2018 Forester XT (with the 2.0 L turbocharged engine) and that thing is a blast and so much fun to drive. Perfect family car for an average car enthusiast. 🙂

I own a 2014 Forester XT. I just love the smooth, silent and soft acceleration without any simulated autotransmission special effects. Drove an Outback XT and loved the engine but this car is too big for my wife and I. We were thinking of buying a Crosstrek 2.5 this year but reading this article convinced me to wait for the next Forester XT 2.4 li. coming to Canada. My Forester has about 100k miles. Come on Subaru!
