The COVID-19 global pandemic has forced people outdoors, away from the crowded city, and automakers are trying to jump on the outdoor lifestyle bandwagon. Subaru didn’t recently jump on the outdoorsy SUV craze; they created it decades ago. The 2020 Subaru Forester compact SUV, 2021 Crosstrek small SUV, and 2021 Outback wagon improve on what they were already good at doing. Getting away from the crowd is what the brand does better now.
How did Subaru make the Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback better at outdoor adventures? All three SUVs have even more off-pavement abilities for customers with active lifestyles. It could be mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, camping, or even more extreme Overlanding.
The 2020 Forester Sport, 2021 Crosstrek Sport, and Outback Onyx Edition XT trim now come with a dual function X-Mode with improved off-pavement abilities over the standard X-Mode which was already good. Now the outdoor models have the outermost reach.
The Forester Sport was the first model to upgrade with dual-function X-Mode in its 2019 model change. The all-new Outback Onyx Edition XT with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine was next in 2020. The 2021 Crosstrek Sport with a new 2.5-liter engine is getting dual-function X-Mode when the small SUV arrives this month.
The all-wheel-drive craze automakers are jumping on is not a new idea for the Japanese automaker; it’s a core value. Subaru is the only brand in the world that offers every one of its SUVs with standard all-wheel-drive. You cannot get a Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, or any Subaru model with two-wheel-drive. Even Jeep offers front-wheel-drive only options.
Standard all-wheel-drive and getting away from the crowd set the Subaru brand apart from other automakers. They are growing their influence and improving on what they were already doing well. The 2020 Subaru Forester Sport, 2021 Outback Onyx Edition XT, and 2021 Crosstrek Sport are the best all-wheel-drive SUVs for customers with active outdoor lifestyles like they have been for decades.
