Subaru Is Down But New Crosstrek Is Up With The Best November Ever

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is the star model in the stable. See how it nearly missed being the top-selling nameplate.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek continues to be the star of Subaru of America's lineup. Subaru reports the newly-redesigned Crosstrek had its best November ever with 12,841 models delivered to customers compare with 10,378 in the same month in 2019. Crosstrek was close to being the best-selling nameplate, just 80 vehicle sales behind the Outback wagon (up 3.5 percent) with 12,921 units sold.

Subaru had an 11.4 percent decrease compared with November 2019, partly due to its top model's low inventory. The Forester compact SUV, the brand's number one model, dropped 25.5 percent with 12,211 sales compared with 16,386 sales in November 2019.

The Subaru Crosstrek has been the star in the lineup since the newly-refreshed models arrived this summer. The Crosstrek Sport and Limited trims get a new 2.5-liter engine giving the all-wheel-drive SUV a needed boost in power.

Some criticized the Crosstrek for still not having enough power and even a turbocharged engine upgrade. But buyers like the Sport and Limited trims and 30 additional horsepower over the 2.0-liter engine in the base and Premium trim.

Subaru retailers are selling as many Crosstrek models as they can get their hands on. The Sport is the hottest model and comes with the new 2.5-liter direct-injection engine and the dual-function X-Mode for improved off-pavement performance.

Millennials are now buying more Crosstrek models as the world feels the impact on personal mobility. Automotive News reports a growing trend toward car ownership due to COVID, and people ages 24 to 39 are leading the push. The demographic is buying many of the record numbers of Crosstrek models in November.

Subaru Canada also reported the 2021 Crosstrek had a record month, up 52 percent over the same month last year. They say the new 2.5-liter Boxer engine is the hottest selling trim with Canadians.

The Crosstrek also gets the nod from Consumer Reports as the automaker's most reliable model in the lineup. And the 2021 Crosstrek wins its segment in ALG's 2021 residual value awards.

Torque News checked with retailers near the Denver Colorado area, and they tell us 2021 Forester inventory is improving, and customers can now find the trim and color they want. Look for Forester to have a strong December. But the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is the star nameplate for Subaru in November.
