Which compact SUVs have the most safety features as standard equipment? An updated report from Consumer Reports (by subscription) says the 2022 Subaru Forester is the second-best compact SUV, $25,000 to $35,000, with standard active safety features. Forester also earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Consumer Reports rated the compact SUVs for standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and blind-spot warning. All 2022 Subaru Forester trims get forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection as part of the standard EyeSight safety system.
CR ranks the Forester number two among the top eight compact SUVs
The 2022 Subaru Forester scores 90 points, just behind the number one Hyundai Tucson (93 points). They are followed but the Honda CR-V (84), Ford Bronco Sport (82), Mazda CX-5 (82), Lexus UX (71), Chevrolet Equinox (74), and Toyota RAV4 (65).
CR says the compact SUVs had to receive high marks for reliability and road tests. The Forester is the only model among the eight that comes standard with all-wheel-drive, another severe weather safety feature.
Consumer Reports says, "The Forester is a well-executed, no-nonsense small SUV with a comfortable and supple ride, responsive steering, and well-controlled body lean around corners. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine provides plenty of power to pass and merge successfully, and fuel economy is impressive at 28 mpg overall. We like that all versions get forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection as part of the standard EyeSight safety system."
Why is the Subaru Forester ranked number two overall? CR says, "Subaru makes blind-spot warning optional on the Premium trim level, and the system isn't even available on the Base trim."
