How safe are Subaru vehicles? If you regularly read my reports, you know I cover Subaru safety extensively. A new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reveals Subaru is one of only nine automakers that have fulfilled an auto brake pledge.
What does it mean for customers who buy a new Subaru vehicle?
Subaru equips 100 percent of its vehicles in the U.S. market with automatic emergency braking (AEB). Subaru uses EyeSight safety technology in all its 2024 model-year vehicles.
IIHS says to fulfill their commitment, manufacturers must attest that the AEB system on their vehicles meets specific performance standards. The forward collision warning feature must meet a subset of NHTSA’s current requirements on the timing of driver alerts.
The AEB must either be able to slow the vehicle by at least ten mph in one of two tests conducted at 12 and 25 mph or by five mph at both speeds — the level of performance needed for an advanced rating in the Institute’s original vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention evaluation.
“The successful completion of this milestone shows what can be achieved when automakers and safety advocates work together toward our common goal of eliminating as many crashes as possible,” IIHS President David Harkey said.
Subaru Impreza and Crosstrek get new safety awards.
Subaru of America recently announced the all-new 2024 Impreza compact car, named a 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The all-new 2024 Crosstrek compact SUV also earned the 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award.

To qualify for the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award in 2023, a vehicle must earn a “Good” rating in the updated side impact test, driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, and original moderate overlap front tests. Headlights rated “Good” or “Acceptable” must be standard across all trims, and a front crash prevention system that earns “Advanced” or “Superior” ratings in both the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations must be available.
“We are thrilled that seven of our 2024 models received an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award, especially under the new criteria,” said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer of Subaru of America, Inc. “This is a testament to our commitment to providing customers with vehicles set to the highest safety standards.”

Subaru recently added AEB to its manual transmission models.
For the first time, Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is standard across the 2024 WRX performance sports car and the BRZ sport coupe lineup, including vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. The advanced safety system includes adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision braking system, lane departure and sway warning, and a lead vehicle start alert.
