It's up and up for Solterra.
The 2024 Subaru Solterra EV just set another new monthly record, and it's now five months in a row for increased sales volume. The Solterra has nearly doubled its U.S. sales from last year, with four months yet to go. Why the sudden surge?
The 2024 Subaru Solterra EV has experienced a significant surge in sales volume, which has continued for five consecutive months. Subaru of America (SOA) reports that the Solterra EV had another record month in August. Here are the results, and then I'll explain what's coming by 2028.
It was the best August ever for Solterra.
Subaru says, "Solterra continued to see sales growth, achieving its best August ever, up 55 percent over the previous year."
SOA reported delivering 1,417 Solterra EVs to customers in August, compared with 915 in August 2023. That's an impressive 54.9 percent increase over the same period last year. There's still more.
SOA sold 8,063 Solterra EVs through the first eight months of 2024, compared with 4,645 models delivered to customers through August 2023. That's a 73.6 percent increase, still the highest percentage of sales increase on any nameplate in the lineup.
Significantly, the Solterra EV, in its second year, has nearly doubled its U.S. sales from last year after eight months of sales volume.
Here are Solterra's record sales performance numbers for the past five months.
- April - 1,456
- May - 1,546
- June - 1,236
- July - 1,261
- August - 1,417
If I project the sales numbers for twelve months, Solterra would have 16,598 for 12 months. It's important to note that Subaru is a value brand, not a luxury automaker. The Solterra is Subaru's most expensive vehicle in its all-wheel-drive and the most expensive SUV.
Here is the 2024 Solterra pricing.
The 2024 Solterra has three trim levels: Premium, Limited, and Touring. Pricing for the Solterra Premium trim level starts at $46,340. The Limited trim carries a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price of $49,840. The top-of-the-line Touring trim is priced at $53,340. Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,345).
Subaru should be encouraged.
Solterra's sales volume should give Subaru Corporation a good idea of what is possible. If Solterra, jointly developed with Toyota, can achieve reasonable success, the new, more affordable electric models that Subaru will launch in the next five years should be successful.
They will offer the same Subaru core values that Solterra offers: all-wheel-drive, top safety scores, and reliability. Check out my report on Solterra earning the Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.
Here is what's coming next for U.S. customers.
Subaru Corporation recently announced they will build a dedicated all-electric model plant by 2027 and begin manufacturing new EV models on the site of its Oizumi plant as they ramp up battery-electric production in the next five years. Read my complete Subaru EV report here.
One Subaru EV will be an all-new 3-Row SUV EV the size of the Ascent. It will be a collaboration with Toyota and built in Kentucky. However, it could be an Ascent 3-Row EV. Stay tuned.
Automotive News (by subscription) says that Subaru could offer an all-new Subaru EV Wagon in the next four years.
"Keeping to the brand's heritage, an Outback-size electric wagon will debut in 2028."
Subaru has not said if and where the new EV wagon will be built, but it could be in Lafayette, Indiana. Subaru might make another significant shift and move the Outback production from the U.S. to Japan sometime next year. You can read my report here. This could indicate an essential change for the Outback.
We know that Subaru Corporation will offer new all-electric models, which should be more affordable than the Solterra midsize SUV EV. Solterra's increased sales bodes well for its U.S. EV sales goals for the Japanese automaker.
The Solterra is on a winning streak, paving the way for a bright future for Subaru in the EV market. If they offer value-priced models, success will follow.

Solterra. Needs to be 1/3 less expensive and have 60% more range. Then I buy it.
Winning formula.
