Subaru Corporation announced that AISIN Corporation is a new partner in producing its next-generation electric vehicles. The two Japanese companies have agreed to jointly develop and share the production of eAxles for use in battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Subaru will start producing its new electric vehicles using the eAxles, the main transmission components, in the latter half of the 2020s, combining their knowledge and expertise in vehicle and transmission development.
High-efficiency, lightweight, and compactness
Subaru says the joint development goals are high efficiency, lightweight, and compactness. "We aim to achieve various performance aspects that consider the environments in which customers will use their vehicles."
"In addition, the two companies will study optimal parts suppliers and production schemes, taking into consideration the maintenance and development of the existing supply chain, which is undergoing significant changes in the business environment due to the advancement of vehicle electrification," says Subaru.
Subaru roadmap to 2050
Subaru recently announced it has established a roadmap toward 2050 to contribute to a carbon-neutral society and is accelerating initiatives such as electrification.
AISIN says it aims to realize a carbon-neutral society by advancing initiatives in terms of "production" and "products." It is accelerating the development of eAxle, the top priority product, by pursuing higher efficiency and downsizing.
The announcement says Subaru and AISIN "will continue to pursue opportunities for collaboration in various areas and will contribute to the further development of an electrified society by providing high-value-added products and technologies that are unique to the two companies.”

Subaru’s EV plan
As I reported in August 2023, new Subaru Corporation CEO Atsushi Osaki announced the new ramped-up EV plan. The Japanese automaker wants to get half its global volume, an estimated 600,000 units, from full-electric models in 2030. Osaki envisions worldwide sales of 1.2 million vehicles by the decade's end.
As I also reported, Subaru's in-house EV production in Japan will start in 2025, which is in line with an annual capacity of about 200,000 vehicles. Subaru will add a line dedicated to EV production in Japan around 2027 with an additional capacity of 200,000 cars. Meanwhile, it plans to localize EV output for the U.S.

MY TAKE
I think it's important for customers to know:
1. Subaru invests in new EV development. It spent about $206.6 million on a new Innovation Hub, which began construction in 2021.
2. Subaru plans to invest $10.3 billion in electrification by 2030. That sum does not include the Innovation Hub but covers $1.7 billion already announced for retooling domestic production.
3. Subaru says the new workspace will allow the design teams to work on 13 vehicles simultaneously.
4. Subaru Corporation is in the global electric vehicle race to win. Once the furthest behind, Subaru is now a leader in electric vehicle technology. Stay tuned.
