Which Subaru models are the sales performance leaders? Subaru of America announced January sales, and only three models outperformed to start the new year. And one of them is a surprise.
Only three Subaru models were in positive figures to start the year.
The Forester, Outback, and Legacy were the only three models that were up in sales volume compared with January 2023. All other models dropped in January.
The Forester had the highest percentage of increase by far of any of Subaru of America's all-wheel-drive nameplates in January.
As I cover the Subaru models monthly, it's unsurprising that Forester and Outback are top performers, but one model is. The Subaru Legacy was the biggest surprise.
- Subaru Forester - 12,619 (+24.8%)
- Subaru Outback - 11,300 (+8.5%)
- Subaru Legacy -1,492 (+17.5)
The new 2024 Subaru Legacy is up and down, and it's Subaru's most challenging model to figure out.
Troy Poston, Senior Vice President of Sales, says, "Car buyers have increasingly more and more reasons to choose Subaru as we meet their needs with a line of vehicles that match their lifestyles."
Forester and Outback are top picks.
It's not a surprise that Forester and Outback are hot models in the new year. The Forester is the hottest model and is now the top seller. The Outback remains a top pick even though it's due for a remodel.
Last month, according to Edmunds's research, the Outback was one of the ten most popular models for new car shoppers. Check out my report here.

New generation models are coming.
The six-generation 2025 Forester will make its dealer launch this spring and is poised to be an even stronger presence in the lineup. And Forester gets a hybrid trim level next year. New 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid details were leaked from dealer meetings. You can read my report here.
The next-generation 2025 Outback has yet to be announced, but it will also get a complete redesign and will be a top pick for U.S. customers. Should you buy the 2024 Outback now or wait for the remodeled 2025 Outback? There are advantages to both.
The 2025 Outback will come with many new upgrades, and it will also get a significant price increase and will be available early next year. The 2024 Outback was picked as one of the best SUVs for the money you can buy now. Check out the report here.
